NBR: smoking in the car with baby

So I was on my way to marshalls today and a car pulled up next to me with a baby in the back seat, and dad threw a cigarette butt out the window. ?The kid was still in one of the infant carriers too, so we're talking little. ?I've heard people comment that there should be a law against allowing people to smoke in the car with babies or children. ?What are your thoughts on a law like this? ?

  • I think it is disgusting, rude and so unfair for the poor child!

  • its grooooooooooooss and irresponsible.
  • I support it.  Yes

I am really against parents smoking around their children, especially in enclosed spaces.  It makes me sick.

  • Ughhhh...that makes me sick.

The other thing I see at least weekly is a kid not in a car seat that is clearly too young and small to be riding without one.

  • I think there should be a law regarding smoking anywhere where any other person can smell it whatsoever, so yes, I feel that should be illegal. (And it's disgusting and child abuse).
  • I think that smoking should be illegal period...its disgusting.
  • Now, don't quote me on this because I haven't checked on it in a while, but I'm pretty sure they did pass a law like that in Europe, and you can be ticketed if you are seen smoking in the car with a child.

Flame away if you like, but I would support such a law.

I think this bothers me more. Yea, so the kid's lungs will be badly affected, but hey, at least it would still be alive in an accident.

My favorite is when the kid is 2 or 3 and standing in the front seat, unbuckled... absolutely ridiculous......?

  • I think it is horriable to smoke in a car with a baby. My FI is a smoker and as soon as we found out we are having a baby he quit smoking in the car. He is also getting the inside cleaned out so there is nothing in the car for the baby to breathe in. I think there should be a law.

  • The State of Maine does have a law against this. I don't think its the only one tho, but I can't be sure.
  • I think if they want to smoke and do that to themselves, fine. But don't smoke around your kids.

Good for your FI...it's a hard thing to do!  Kudos to you both!

  • I would support it but I don't know if it would pass.. I can see where it infringes on rights, although the children can't defend themselves against it so it could be debated that you're being an advocate for them. ?
  • As a former smoker (I quit as soon as I found out I was pg), I can see this from both sides. I will say that If you are in the front seat, smoking, have your window completely down and the cigarette basically out the window, practically nothing is actually making it to the back seat. I know this because if non-smokers rode with me I was always very careful to ask if they cared that I smoked, and tried my hardest to keep it away from them.

Now... as a soon to be mommy... I don't want that stuff anywhere around my baby. But I don't smoke now...

  • This is illegal in Ontario, where I live you can't smoke with a child under the age of 12 in the car. I think its great.

NO NO NO NO NO NO! It does go in there, and the people that you had with you were probably just too polite to decline. I say this is a former smoker, so don't even act like it is ok at all!

Not completely true.  Smoke can still funnel to the back seat with the window open.  There really is no safe way to smoke in a car with a kid.  My sister (when she still smoked) was terrible for this.  She always thought that if she had the window open, it was fine.  Meanwhile, her son is coughing away in the backseat or comes out smelling like smoke.  Not cool.  We've had many a fight about this.  I actually pulled over once and made her get out of the car to smoke.  So, yes - I'd loved to see a law in all places regarding this.  Children need people to advocate for them when there parents won't.

  • I think it's absolutely disgusting.  My MIL is selfish smoker and refuses to change her ways around me and probably won't around the baby.  We've stopped going to their house and riding in her car and have already told her that the baby will never be at their house or in their car unless she stops smoking.  My FIL is also telling her this daily but she won't stop.

  • Ditto Mrs.Teddy. It is illegal up here.

  • Ok.. So ask I was saying.. before IE went nuts... and duplicated about 20 posts which I just went and deleted...

It should be banned because a child does not have the ability or the know how to get away from cigarette smoke.  When my god daughter learned about smoking in school she pretty much stayed in her room when her parents smoked.  She also started to educate them on how bad smoking is for you.

  • It's illegal in CA for anyone to smoke in a car with a minor under 18. And some cities have banned public smoking too. In Calabassas and Thousand Oaks, if you are smoking within 20 feet of someone in public and they ask you to move or put it out, you have to or you will be fined. I think they are both great laws, but I especially love the car one.

Even as a former smoker, I have to say that I would support a law like this! Before I was pregnant, it really upset me when I would see people doing this. As parents, it's our job to protect our little ones, not put them in harmful &?poisonous?situations. If we choose to smoke, that's one things, but it's entirely?another?to subject a child to your second hand smoke.?
