PLEASE help settle debate between DH and I...

Ok, I really need some honest opinions here. DH always lets me "decorate" our house and never says anything. In fact, he always likes what I wind up choosing, but today he got SUPER mad at me bc of this. I decided I thought our kitchen needed a "splash" of color and went and painted our chairs a robins egg blue and he is SO mad....says it looks horrible and why did I ruin a good thing, etc. I actually like it. I think our kitchen is light and airey and it adds a unique touch to it. What do you guys think? Is it really that bad? PLEASE be honest. (Also, the chairs used to be black, so I am going to pip the only pic I have of when they were black from last year. Also, I only painted 2 out of 4 so far, so you can see the other 2 are still black in the "after" pics.) I'm also PIPing the wall next to the table so you can tell me if you think it goes with the decor, etc. He wants me to "ask everyone I know" bc he doesn't believe me that it looks good.

What do you think?

  • Ugh...is there a way for me to make the pics smaller?

  • I don't think they look bad in the blue, but I think they matched better when they were black.

  • I kind of like them black better too.  But, just had to say that your house looks awesome!  I live in MI to and my house isn't that nice looking!
  • I'm sorry. I really want to be on your side, but I don't like them.
  • i don't dislike it- but i would have asked my DH before doing something that permanent and bold (even though i also usually do all the decorating in the house)... it's not for everyone.
  • I like the blue. But I think it's a very unique choice & I can see why your DH is not happy that you at least didn't run it by him first. Oops.

See...that's the thing. It was a $5 can of spraypaint...not really that permanent at all. I can change it back, which is why I don't see why he is so mad. This is also funny bc I am SUPER into neutrals, but I was just getting sick of the black..we've had it for years.

  • I like them, but I do think the blue is a little bright--I like it better than the black, but I might have gone w/ a more antique-y looking blue than the robin's egg. ?

    what a gorgeous room!?

  • Well don't tell your dh but I think I like the black better.  The blue is ok but I really like the black.
  • I'm surprised, but I actually like them blue.  It's a great blue, and your kitchen is light and airy.

    Me with my littlest.
  • The blue is nms but they don't look bad. I agree that I would have discussed with DH b4 doing such a bold thing in the kitchen.
  • I really like the black better. Sorry.
  • I don't think they look bad in blue, but liked them in black better.
  • I like the blue, but the black looked better imo.

Also, I saw a comercial with Brooke Shields for a lash grower.

I'm totally with your DH on this one.  Blue is my favorite color but that's just too much for my eyes.

  • I love all the light that room gets!

I like the blue color but I don't think it's right for the style of the chairs.

    THIS

  • I also agree with a pp that maybe a different blue, not that bright or bold, would look better.
  • Dang! I appreciate the honest opinions. I am just so sick of the black. Maybe I can try another color that isn't as bright. The store didn't have a ton of spray paint options though. Maybe I will leave them for a few weeks and then paint them back...we've just had the black forever!
  • I like the blue better than the black.  The black is so plain...nothing bad about it, but it's kind of boring.  I might have made the blue just a few shades lighter...but overall I like the blue better.

I usually decorate too...but I do think my DH would like it if I ran a change like that by him first.

  • Love the blue!  I think its personal preference.  Its hard to tell because the picture was taken at night, but I'll bet they look amazing with the sun streaming in those windows.

  • I would try a metallic style... like a bronze or nickel, whatever matches best. GL and consult with DH next time. :-)
  • OMG-- check out the new PB catalogue. ?There's a whole layout w/ robins egg blue chairs-- LOVE it!!!
  • I think I might have went with white or something. Don't like the blue does not go with the fabric on the chair seats.  Sorry!

First, I LOVE that window!  What a gorgeous view.

I don't hate the blue, but I don't really love it either.  I can see why you wanted to change the black though.   If you go back to black, what about changing the fabric on the chairs to something a little more bold?  Maybe do the blue there? Or, what about a two tone type paint, if you're crafty.   You could spray the chairs black and then do a little sanding so the blue comes through in some spots.

  • Sorry, but I liked them better before.

  • I like the idea but I don't think it works with your current decor. It isn't shabby chic enough or funky to pull off the chairs that way.

Also ditto the pp's. Beautiful windows and floors!

  • Your house and sense of style amazing. ?With that said, I like the black better.

  • I like the black better too but I think it's because I don't think the cushion looks right with the blue, not necessarily b/c of the color.  I also don't like the blue next to the other chair with the chair cover.

  • I don't hate the blue, but what if you did the chairs a more neutral color and then recovered the seat cushions in a fun pattern/color?  What about doing the chairs a slate gray and then a damask with the gray/blue/white?
  • I love it, they're so fun! your dining room and kitchen are BEAUTIFUL! I think it's just PAINT, for goodness' sake- switch it up once in awhile.

    LOVE it.

  • I'm in the minority, but I like the blue.... I agree about the black being boring after having it for years.... I wish I was spontaneous enough to do this!

But, maybe next time, run it by your DH first to keep the peace  ;)
