B/C - Anyone know anything about...

Micronor?  I was on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen for 10 years until we TTC, but obv. since I'm BF'ing, I can't take this.  My OB recommended Micronor, a type of mini-pill or progest-only pill.  I'm nervous to take something different, b/c (A) I'm not sure it'll really work, and (B) wondering if it'll screw me up or something - lol!

I'm not good w/ change, and obv. Ortho worked so well, and I got pregnant right away after going off of it.  I'd hate to take something new and then want to get PG again and have problems from a new pill or something.  Anyways, just wondering if any of you are on this or heard anything about it.

Or, what do YOU take for b/c if you are BFing?  Obv. there are condoms, which I have no problem using, but it'd be nice to take something so we wouldn't always have to use condoms.  TIA!

Re: B/C - Anyone know anything about...

  • I am not much help. We decided not to start any hormonal birth control, and just use condoms and temp and chart. I had horrible migraines from birth control pills and I really believe they are the reason it took us 9 months to get pregnant. I would really investigate any pill you decide to use.

  • I was on the mini pill while BF'ing.  The mini pill is not as effective as regular BC, so you need to be really careful about taking it every day at the exact same time.  It's really your only option other than condoms unless you do something like FAM.  But you really don't need to worry about it screwing you up, it's much less likely to do that than regular BC.  As soon as I stopped BF'ing I went back on my regular pill, which was also Ortho Tri Cyclen.

  • I think micronor is what my prescription was for - I take the generic version.  The mini-pill is really your only option for hormonal bc while you are bf'ing I think.  It's been fine for me, although we use condoms as backup since the mini-pill is not as effective as the regular pill.

  • I'm on micronor (actually they filled it as camilla the generic) and have been since 6 weeks pp. I have yet to get any periods or anything thus far..when I stop EPing I will be getting back on a regular birth control pill...my dr. said the combination of nursing/pumping with this pill should prevent pregnancy...though we still use condoms sometimes...I haven't had any problems on this pill thus far.

  • After pregnant with Brooks I took Camila (mini-pill). Didn't have any problems and got pregnant with Caroline right away.

After Caroline I started with Mirena (if you remember I had tons of issues with it) so I'm back on Camila again.

Actually I think both IUDs (Paraguard and Mirena) are approved for use while nursing.

I don't know about IUDs while nursing.  Since Paraguard is non-hormonal, it may be ok.  I know my OB wouldn't do Mirena while nursing, but that doesn't mean others won't.  I didn't really ask why though, just took his word.

  • I have an IUD and I'm still nursing.  I have Paragard.  But I was told I could get a Mirena and it would be fine while I was nursing.  I know there are lots of people who BF with IUDs.  I chose Paragard b/c I didn't want hormones, but it was completely unrelated to BFing.

  • I'm on jolivette, which is I think is another generic for micronor. So far it has worked well for me. I was still way too swollen and tender to even consider an IUD at my 4-week check-up, so I set the alarn on my cell phone to remind me to take it. We are talking about TTC next fall, so I haven't decided if I want to go through the hassle of the IUD insertion and removal or just wait to go back on Ortho TriCyclen in January when I wean.

That's good to know, I really had no idea.  My OB is very conservative with IUDs.  He won't give one to anyone who hasn't had a baby either, and I know alot of OBs will.  At the time I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I didn't ask alot of questions or do any research.  I'm considering Mirena now, but am not nursing anymore, so it's a moot point for me.  Maybe next time though :)

  • I got the Mirena IUD around 3 mos PP. I was BFing then. I was told by my OB that my only options for BC while nursing were condoms, mini-pill (unreliable per her), and IUD. GL with your decision!!

I'm glad this issue came up, I was going to ask for opinions also.

I had my 6 week check-up yesterday, and given that I am exclusively BF'ing and we will (probably) TTC in the next 1-2 yrs, my doctor recommended Micronor instead of getting an IUD (which i didn't really want anyway).

I started taking it last night-----my OB was very reassuring that if I take it correctly and continue to BF, I should have no problems.  I sincerely hope she is right---I do NOT want an accident on our hands any time soon!!!  Even though we don't really want to, we may use condoms as a back-up too.  Sigh....... I didn't miss worrying about these issues for the past year!

  • Thanks everyone - I really appreciate the input!!  I think I'm going to take the Micronor (it's better than just using condoms alone, although I know it's not as strong as my trusty ol' Ortho!)
