Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Why do people worry so much about how they will look...

after pregnancy??  I don't get it.  You just had a baby.  Nobody cares....and if they do, they are stupid.  Having your baby safely is slightly more important than how you look afterwards.  Just sayin......

Re: Why do people worry so much about how they will look...

  • You mean it's not normal to look like Nicole Ritchie right when you leave the hospital??

  • I don't think it's stupid to care about how you look. BUT i think some people are a little unrealistic about how they actually will look after just giving birth.

  • I don't know what this in response to, but:

One word: PICTURES.  I can barely look at my post-birth pics with DD, and it makes me sad.  I'm growing out my hair in anticipation of this birth, and bringing something to wear other than the granny-muumuu-looking hospital gowns.

ETA: Ah, I see you mean the weight thing.    Well, that I CAN'T comment on, since I never bothered to lose weight from baby #1 before baby #2.  I have my work cut out for me.....

  • I just don't feel like "myself" being 20lbs overweight. ?Plus I've always been an active runner and I haven't been able to get out and exercise in months, so I miss that a lot.

Meh. I look like crap in our first pics but I had just had surgery.  Not really supposed to be all glam at that point.  I did have my own clothes though and did my hair and makeup when I could get up - that just made me feel more human though.

I completely understand that....I'm in the same boat as you.  But that woman that just posted a little bit ago about being scared to have a c-section because she might end up with a pouch???  That just seems silly to me.

  • Yes I just had a baby but I also hate feeling like sh!t about myself.  Just sayin....

I guess my fear isn't really what other people think about me, really I could care less. My problem is I have had body "issues" in the past - never being really satisfied with myself. When your pregnant you loose what little control you may have had - and that is hard, at least for me. I don't know what it will be like after I have my baby - but I am concerned that dealing with a body that is less cooperative then before may be a challenge for me. I guess everyone is different. However, I do think finally meeting my little one will make it a lot better.

This.  Yes, it took 9 months to put on, but you didn't put on fat ONLY in the 9 months, so I don't agree that it should take 9 months to come off necessarily.  And yes, having a beautiful healthy baby is most important but feeling good about myself will ultimately contribute to me being a good parent and feeling like myself.

  • because pre-baby i was a perfect size two, long lucious blonde locks, toned muscles, and feeling really great about how i look

now.... i feel like crap about my appearance.  i'm just NOT ok with looking mediocre.

  • I don't think anyone here would trade the experience of having a child or their child's health/safety for keeping their looks. However, I think it's more than natural for women to care about what they look like - post labor or otherwise.

Heck, I'm a pretty confident chick, and it's very important to me to like myself, which definitely includes liking the way I look. And, to tell you the truth, I was pretty horrified at the way my body looked for a while after having DS. That's not to say that I wasn't proud of my body for what it was capable of, though. I think feeling good about yourself/one's body is part of being a complete person - which is a necessity for being a good parent.

That didn't read like a rant, did it? :))

  • I think it is sad if you use "being a mother" as an excuse for going around looking like a dumptruck.  You are only fooling yourself if you think appearances are not important in our society.  I think having good hygiene and healthy eating and exercise habits are part of being a good parent and role model.  (If you only meant the crazies who are desperate to be back in shape 1 week after delivery, then disregard what I just said.  Stick out tongue)

I don't think this is what she meant. I, personally, have every intention of getting my butt to the gym as soon as I get the OK from the doctor at my 6 week pp appt.  I just wasn't about to beat myself up for something that up to this point has been beyond my control.
