1st. sorry to ask about such a rotten procedure....
but what kind of sedation did you have?
Mine is scheduled for 7am tomorrow, under general. I had to FIGHT HARD to get this done before friday. My doc didn't even have the time to call me at all... her nurse has been doing the dirty work. (needless to say, another doc is doing it, and I'm not returning to her for many reasons)
anywho.....
I read everything sedation-wise is from local, to local & loopy, to general.
I'm a little leary of being totally knocked out and intubated when I don't need to be. Any thoughts welcome, thanks.
Re: Those that have had a D&C ...
No info, just wanted to say I am so sorry.
is twilight with the epi-type block and meds?
I think I had local plus loopy meds with my ACL knee repair, and loved it, felt nothing, but did hear the stupid nurses talking their traps off...
I guess I don't want to be out the entire day, nor take the risk of intubation.
I had general. Only bad thing is when I woke up I was super nauseous.. I threw up about 3-4 times after receiving more medication each time. I did feel pretty good later that day though, which was a surprise to me.
As terrible as this situation is, I think it's better to get in as soon as possible, so you can eventually move on. It's a sad, sad thing and like I've said before I cried A LOT. But I didn't want to prolong it. So I'm glad they can get you in that soon.
I'm really sorry again Davez. I know you will give Ava extra squeezes.
I was totally knocked out and intubated. They don't normally need to do this for a d&c. I don't know what happened to me but the night before my d&c I started puking and puked every hour the entire night up until 4 hours before we had to go to the hospital. They had to intubate me because of that but I think in "normal" cases they can just use a local or local and loopy.
Again, I'm so sorry you are going through this....

First off, I am so sorry for your loss.
I had general with mine, but it was my 3rd time under general and I knew how I'd react. I think twilight or general would be ok. I get a little nauseous with both, but at least with twilight your throat and shoulder aren't sore. I would definitely make sure that you are asleep enough so that you don't hear anything and that you don't remember anything. I've done a twilight sleep quite a few times and I never hear or remember anything. The recovery would be a lot easier with twilight. Good luck.
No, twilight sedation is fentanyl (sure I'm spelling that wrong) via IV. Same type of sedation as I've had for my retrievals with IVF. Different people react differently, for some (most) they don't remember anything and are pretty out of it even though technically they're semi-conscious, but for me it just makes me sleepy and out of it but I can still talk fine and am aware and know what's going on (no pain though). I completely remember both of my ERs and my hysteroscopy/D&C.
first of all, i just wanted to say again that i am so sorry for your loss. i was under general anesthesia for my d&c and i am glad that i was. i had never had general before, so i was extremely nervous. it is great that you are scheduled at 7AM, the procedure is quick so you will be back home in your own bed that morning. my general anesthesia was given to me through an IV. i asked the anesthesiologist to please give me something to make sure i would not be nauseous when i woke up. i never had any nausea so whatever he gave me must have worked. i never got loopy or anything. all i remember is them telling me they were giving me something in my IV, and the next minute I was asleep. When they woke me up, the procedure was over and I was being wheeled to the recovery room, then they moved me to another room where DH sat with me while I ate a muffin and drank a ginger ale. I was a little groggy the rest of the day but that was the worst of it, as I was emotionally exhausted anyway. I was intubated but I never felt it. My throat was not scratchy or anything afterwards. Best of luck, and feel free to page/pm me if you have any other questions.

Do you have a choice for your anesthesia? ?I just talked to my husband. He's a nurse anesthetist and he said all the OB's at his hospital do the D&C's under general because they don't do blocks-injecting the numbing medicine into your cervix. ?Could that be why it is under general?
I had twilight with mine and recovered just fine. ?I hope yours goes ok on Thursday. ??

My heart boke when I read about you losing Harvey.
I had drugs when I had my suction curettage at an MDs office. Valium, I think. I felt and heard everything. Everything. Everything. I just couldn't move. Worst damn experience of my life, feeling him take my baby away from me. DH still cringes when we speak of it (he was table-side). I still cry.
Get as far away from the pain as you can.
Thinking of you.
I am so sorry about your loss, that really REALLY sucks.
Both of my D&Cs have been under general, i prefer it that way, No pain, no chance of hearing, seeing or feeling anything i wouldnt want to. My recovery from general is usually very fast.
THinking of you!

I had an IV sedation that once they turned on the meds, I was completely out. I don't even know if i was intubated....I recall nothing after being wheeled into the operating room until i woke up in recovery. I was cold when i woke up though. My d&c was at 13 wks so there was no other way my doc would do it.

First of all. Im so sorry.
Mine was done with whatever sedation you get for IVF...nothing heavy but I was out out. It was VERY easy I just felt crampy after...and of course I was very emotional. Hang in there Im so sorry!

This is the first I've seen of your news. I'm so very sorry!
I have not been on the boards the past few days, so I missed your post and wanted to tell you how sorry I am for your loss.
I was completely under and intubated. For me, I think it was the best thing. I didn't really have any problems coming out of the anesthesia.
(((hugs)))
I had general through an IV (is that considered general?). All I remember is that they put the IV in, asked me some questions and wheeled me back to the OR room. My doc came over and told me everything would be fine, etc.....he told me to count to 10. I remember getting to about 3 and saying that the meds going through the IV stung a little. And literally that was it....I was completely out. The next thing I knew, I was in recovery and waking up. I felt a little loopy, but I came out of it pretty quickly.
(((HUGS)) again and good luck tomorrow.......
I'm so sorry for your loss. My D&Cs were done under general anesthesia. I didn't have any problems recovering from the anesthesia but I know everyone's different. GL! I hope it goes smoothly for you. ((HUGS))
I was out and had an LMA (not fully intubated), so I think that's considered general anesthesia. I felt nothing and remember nothing. I recovered very quickly; I think I even made it to a brief meeting at work a few hours later.
Physically, the D&C was very easy. Easier than egg retrievals. Physically easier even than my natural m/c.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Davez,
I have no advice but wanted to send you some hugs. I'm so sorry.
(((((((((((hugs)))))))))))
I was knocked out, and I am glad I was. I just couldn't handle it emotionally. I was hysterical.
I am so sorry you have to go through this.
