Anyone here with hypothyroidism?

For a few months now I've been extremely fatigued, having extremely heavy periods, pain and stiffness in both of my knees, 10lbs of weight gained in 2 months (which is alot for me b/c I've never in my life put on that much weight so fast), and alopecia with no known underlying cause. I've also been feeling like an "airhead" lately, if that makes sense. I can't seem to remember anything. I was preparing to call the Dr to schedule an appt with him just to get a referral to the ortho for my knees, but then I wondered, would it be too much to also mention the heavy periods and fatigue. Now I wonder if it could all be related. Ive suffered with infertility for years now, so I think it's wise to have it checked. I could just blame all of this on stress since Jayden is being evaluated for autism next week, my cousin was murdered the day before mother's day, and our house is on the market. My life is filled with stress, but I don't want to possibly ignore my health by blaming everything on stress.

If you have experience with hypothyroidism, what were your early symptoms and how did you handle the treatments? And how soon did you start to feel better. I am so ready to start feeling like myself again.

  • Are you cold a lot?

You have common symptoms of hypothyroidism, but those symptoms are also common to a lot of other stuff. It's easy to check for thyroid disorders though. I would definitely talk to a doctor ASAP.

  • I have hypothyroidism.  I don't recall having any glaringly obvious clues before I was first dx'd (in high school).  Now, if my meds need to be adjusted, I notice that I get tired very easily.  Although, I was hypo pretty much my entire last pg, and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.  It takes a week or 2 for me to feel better when my meds are adjusted.  All of the signs you mention are signs of hypothyroidism, so it certainly wouldn't hurt to get it checked out...it's just a simple blood draw.  Good luck!
  • I wasn't diagnosed until I had my OB blood-panel done for my second pregnancy, but apparently my thyroid got damaged from the miscarriage I had between my first and second child. It hasn't affected my fertility, but the symptoms that were huge for me were the fatigue, dry skin, and constipation and the weight-gain/difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise changes. Like the PP, I notice a change in how I feel when my dosage needs to be changed. I'm on a super-high dose this pregnancy(137mcg. when I started out at 50 mcg.) and will have to be monitored by an endocrinologist moving forward. It's just one tiny pill every morning before you eat breakfast. I started feeling better within a couple of weeks and have had no side effects from the medication. GL.

  • I had all of the same symptoms and was diagnosed w/ PCOS.  My thyroid is a big part of that diagnosis but it is not the only issue.  I would definately talk to your doctor.  There are things they can do to help!
  • I am ALWAYS covered up with a throw, so yeah I'm always cold :( Also, I've been having constipation issues since July of last year. I just scheduled an appt with my PCM on June 2. Thanks ladies.
