1st Trimester

No First Appointment Ultrasound

Is there anyone else out there that is not getting an ultrasound to begin with?  My doctor told me that because I knew when I got pregnant that it was not necessary.  There are a lot of twins in the family, I was curious to see if it was twins. =(

It is going to be a long 16 weeks before I get an ultrasound!

Re: No First Appointment Ultrasound

  • A lot of people who get early u/s only get them because they have a history of m/c or did IF treatments. Be glad you are in that category.

  • My first appointment (at 9w3d) was a lot of paper work, blood work, a urine sample, a pelvic exam, and a lot of talking.  No u/s for us either - and my doc is using LMP for calculating my due date even though I told her I have irregular cycles.

    Sigh.

If we were not doing the NT scan, we would not get an u/s until 20 weeks.

  • I'm only getting one this time because of my history of m/c. The last two pregnancies I had u/s for dating, because I have long cycles and LMP doesn't really apply. But I was told the first time that unless there was a good reason to have more, I would only have the one big u/s. I think that's pretty common.

  • i only got an early ultrasound because i have had a miscarriage before and was really nervous about having another, so to ease my worry they scheduled an U/S for me at 6w 6d.

It is more the norm to have one later (9w or 12w)

  • My 1st appt isn't until 6/16 & I'm not sure if I'll have a u/s then either.  I hope too because it is so exciting & reassuring to see.  Did you at least get to hear the heartbeat?

Umm. She's 4 weeks. The heart hasn't even started beating yet. Hmm

  • we had our first u/s at 12 weeks. i think our doc. does them because they work through medicaid, which is who my insurance provider is. our next one is around 20 weeks for gender ID.
  • Are you doing an NT scan at 12 weeks.  A lot of women only get one us.  So this is normal... So sorry, but glad you dont' have past issues like some other women, including myself.  Makes the first 12 weeks a little stressfull..

  • I didn't have one at my first appt either. A week later we were scheduled for  a transvag u/s just to check on everything, including how many were in there. I'm not high risk, or anything like that, so it may just be how that office works.
  • Yes, I am thankful not to be in that catergory.  I didn't think about history of m/c and such, I thought my doctor was just being old school.

My doctor only does the 20 week ultrasound unless there is problems.  My son had kidney problems so my last pregnacy I had about 10 of them.

I will hopefully get to hear the heartbeat at my first appointment (when I am 8 weeks).

  • I only get one around 18-20 weeks unless the doctor deems medically necessary.

untrue for me.  my dr gives a u/s at every visit because that's his preferred way of measuring the baby.

sorry you don't get to see your bean for so long!

  • oops, didn't even notice

  • I think it depends on your insurance and doctor.  We had one at 9 weeks during my first appointment.  I don't have a history of m/c nor had IF treatments.
  • We are going for the 1st appt this Thursday and the nurse said that they will listen for the heartbeat, and only if they can't find it they will do an ultrasound.  :(

My friend is 2 months pg ahead of me and had an u/s at her 1st appt.

I guess every doc is different, but I would prefer to get one earlier.

  • I had only one u/s (at 20 weeks) with DD.

I have early ultrasounds now because of my history of miscarriages.

    DD3 - 3.28.11
  • I'm unsure how whether my OB does them regularly, but I had one at my first appt to measure the baby and date the pregnancy since I didn't know my last LMP exactly and thought that I had ovulated late (I was on BCP).
  • I had my first appointment at 4w1d and all they did was take blood, pee in a cup, and check me out. We have our first u/s at 8 weeks.
  • My OB also does them at every appt up until the 20 week one where it's done at the imaging center.  She doesn't charge for them either.  It's just the way she does it.  But I also know that isn't common.
