Pumping Question

I am sorry to ask a question and run, but I am really on borrowed time right now. ?I brought home a very fussy baby!

I have had to pump some milk already when he hasn't emptied enough to relieve pressure. ?The first time it was fine and kept perfectly and looked uniform later on. ?The next time I pumped, the milk has?separated and is really watery on top and has like a ring of solid around the edge. ?Is that ok to feed him or is something wrong with my milk? ?I just pumped it and put it in the fridge and this is how it looked the next day. ?I am so worried about my milk keeping since I will have to pump when I go back to work!?

Re: Pumping Question

  • It is very common for it to separate, especially in the beginning and the ring of solid happens when you put it in the fridge.

I usually just shook it well before feeding it to her.?

  • That is 100% normal! The fat separates when it gets cold. When you reheat it, just gently swirl the milk and it will look normal again! The hindmilk is fattier so maybe the first time you pumped mostly foremilk?

  • Thanks! ?I knew someone here would know. ?I looked at kellymom but didn't see anything about this, I am still learning the site though. ?I feel so much better already!

  • Totally normal, but DONT SHAKE!  Just swirl gently until it mixes.  Shaking kills some of the good stuff in the milk (I think I read that on kellymom and somewhere else).

That's exactly what it should look like.  Milk isn't homogenized when it comes out of our bodies. :)  You're doing a great job!!!  :)

Yes, I also read not to shake.  Once you warm it, and gently swirl it, it will all mix back in together perfectly.
