Nate will not sleep

Off and on for the past week, Nate has been waking up around 10 or 11 pm and having trouble getting back to sleep.  It will take him up to 2 hours to fall back asleep.  The past couple of weekends, he's been refusing naps at home.  He takes a 2 hour nap at daycare, but he won't nap at all at home.  Unless we get in the car, and then he'll sleep for as long as we're driving.

Yesterday we spent over an hour driving around and Nate napped the whole time.  We didn't have any errands to run today so he didn't nap at all until we got in the car and drove 25 mins to a friend's house.  And then he slept the trip home, but that's it.

We decided to put him to bed early b/c he was SO tired and he was very relaxed and drowsy when I put him down.  But he's been crying for 30 mins already (I'm checking on him every 10 mins).  For weeks he's been at least going to sleep easily, but tonight he won't even go to sleep.

I'm exhausted and I just don't understand why he won't sleep!  :(  We gave him motrin tonight before bed and he seems to feel okay.  I don't know what else to do.  I'm worn out, frustrated and out of ideas.  And I feel so bad for him because I know that he is completely exhausted, but he just can't seem to get any good sleep.  :(  Any thoughts on what else we can try?

Re: Nate will not sleep

  • Does he have molars? The first ones can come in around a year... and they are awful!!! DD got all 4 in a week and it was the worst week. I'd maybe keep up with the motrin.

  • My first thought was the same as sms, teeth.  Eli has been cutting all 4 of his molars for the past few weeks and this sounds exactly like what he's been doing.  Waking up crying for no reason, and not being able to go back to sleep.  Could it be that?  Nothing has helped Eli this time around, it sucks!  We've just been doing everything we can, Motrin, teething tablets, teething necklace, and Orajel on the worst nights.  The past few days it's been much better, so I hope we're coming to the end.  Has Nate been extra cranky during the day too?  Oddly, Eli hasn't gotten a fever with these teeth like he has the others.

  • Teeth are my thoughts as well.  We're going through the same thing but with the big daddy molars.  BabyHill will wake up and has been super grouchy.  Keeping him dosed on Tylenol seems to be the only thing that helps take the edge off.
  • I have suspected that it could be the molars too.  I just wish the Motrin helped more!  I bought some Humphrey's Teething tablets and I hate them compared to the Hyland.  So I guess I'll buy more of those too.  It's nice to know that this sounds typical for teething molars, at least.

He did finally fall asleep at 8.  I hope he gets some decent sleep tonight.  He really needs it!

  • I hope you can get some rest!  Have you double checked with your pedi recently to make sure Nate's getting the right dose of Mortin?  The last time Eli was sick the pedi said I could be giving him more.  So you might want to check if you haven't recently.

Hyland's are the only teething tablets we've tried, so I'll defintely make sure to only get the same kind in the future!  It never occured to me the different brands might not work the same.

Good luck, I hope it doesn't last long!
