talk to me about having your wisdom teeth removed

mine have been growing in funky (like completely under my other teeth) and they've been giving me major headaches and they're starting to mess up my bite. i can't put having them removed any longer. bc they're growing in the way they are i have to have them cut out. so who's had theirs cut out instead of just pulled?

Re: talk to me about having your wisdom teeth removed

  • I have a story about that.  I had all 4 removed--one was impacted, i.e. had to be cut out, and the other 3 just had to be pulled.  He did the impacted one first and said, "Okay, this may hurt" and proceeded to chip and chisel the tooth to pieces and take it out.  It didn't hurt or bother me in the least so I thought, "This is nothing!"

Then he started to pull the next tooth.  It was a total nightmare--literally, I think I had nightmares about having my teeth pulled out.  I could totally feel him pulling and it yanked my head around and the nurse had to hold me down because the dentist almost pulled me out of the chair and I was grabbing his hands to make him stop.  It sucked.

I would rather have them cut and chipped out any day!

  • I did when I was 17 or so.  You will have to be put under and you will be pretty sore for at least a few days... I was pretty swollen, but I was eating by the next day and I was surprised by how fast it got better.  What else do you want to know?

DH had two wisdom teeth cut out last year. They bled off rnd on for the first day and he kept ice on it for most of the day. They gave him some good pain meds and as long as he kept up with them, he was fine. The worst part for him was the procedure. They didn't put him to sleep, just gave him a local and it didn't work. He was awake and feeling the pain and all they could do was try to numb it with more novocaine.

  • I had mine cut out.  I was really nervous but I didn't feel anything while I was under.  They gave me really good drugs afterwards so I just stayed sedated for a couple days.  My face was really swollen and bruised but overall it wasn't that horrible.  The worst part I remember was the open holes that were left & if anything cold got in them, OUCH!  It might be more difficult to stay drugged with a LO though.  GL

i don't know if i want to know a lot of details bc then i'll freak out!

  • I had mine cut out 10 years ago. They knocked me out for it, after it I was only uncomfortable for a day and I was eating normal again in about a week.
  • I had them out my senior year of high school.  All 4 of mine were bone impacted so they basically had to break them apart in my mouth and remove them that way.  I was SO out of it the first day or so, and they gave me some seriously strong pain meds to take home.  Endocets... they made me so lifted I was nodding off in the middle of writing words at school and my mom started cutting them in half because she didn't like how high they made me.

Recovery was just like a C/S in the sense that if you follow your instructions and keep on top of your pain meds you'll be fine.

  • Well I'm a dental hygienist. If your wisdom teeth are impacted which it sounds its not to bad to take out. Just make sure you have a oral surgeon take them out! Not a general dentist!!!

If you are getting headaches it is probably sinus....allergies will make your upper teeth ache also..try a clariten or zyrtec.

lower impacted teeth can't crowd your teeth,.. teeth will always shift till you die no matter what. The impacted wisdom will probably decay the teeth they push against...

Your bite might be off from grinding or clenching

I had all 4 removed and I'm in love with my oral surgeon. Seriously.  When I had my first two taken out it was great.  He was a nice man, great surgeon and it didn't hurt.  I wasn't even put under!  Just local anesthetic!  He tried to give me a valium drip, but I turned it down (crazy eh?).

The healing process was fine, just gauze in your mouth and liquids for a couple of days.  I had a couple of beers and some vicodin and chilled out when I got home.

When I had the other two out I told my Dr I was sad because I had no more wisdom teeth to take out.  LOL!  He thought I was a riot and gave me like twice as many vicodin as I needed.

Honestly, it's not that bad of an experience at all.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean about having them cut out. Do you mean oral surgery?

I had all four of my wisdsom teeth surgically removed when I was 24 years old (9 years ago- holy crap). They were all completely impacted. I had a great experience. My oral surgeon gave me IV sedation, so I don't remember anything about the surgery, but I was awake enough to follow their instructions to turn my head, open my mouth or whatever. It was like I was knocked out, but I really wasn't. I used a water pick to clean out the holes in my mouth while they healed. If I remember correctly, I was sore for a few days, but not too bad.

this makes sense. i'm constantly catching myself clenching my teeth.

  • Definitely go to an oral surgeon (I would hope no general dentist would attempt this) and get a recommendation from people you know.  I didn't and had a not-so-good experience which I will not discuss with you Wink... it could have been avoided had I gone to someone better.

  • i had all 4 boney impacted wisdom teeth removed 4 years ago. i didn't want to be put under so i was on a valium drip (just to keep me calm) and novocaine.  i was talking through the whole procedure to the surgeon. ditto pp about making sure you go to an  Oral or Maxillofacial Surgeons to do the surgery.

i was late in getting my pain meds and when the pain kicked in IT HURT REALLY BADLY, but i found my "inner strength" and suffered until tony got me my percocet lol. i was fine about a week later and had minimal swelling and bruising.

  • Mine were impacted and taken out in college. They put me under. When I woke up, I kept asking, "Where are my glasses?" And they were like, you're wearing them. Repeat, repeat, repeat. ;-P

Anyway, for the first 30 minutes there was a lot of blood if you changed the gauze. Then it dried up and you had liquid diet with pain meds.

The pain meds they gave me made me nauseous so I stuck with tylenol and stayed in bed a day.

Also they gave me a plastic syringe that you fill with water and gush into the pockets (where your teeth once were) to remove any food after a meal. I had to use that a while.

  • oh yea i'll definitely go to an oral surgeon. my dentist is a family friend of dh's family (my dh and sil call him "uncle" lol), so i know he'll rec someone reputable.

How honest do you want me to be?
  • Me!  I only had two out, top and botom on the same side, both were growing more towards my teeth than up, so they were removed by an oral/plastic surgeon.  They put me under with valium, (which was fantastic by the way) and I don't remember a thing beyond them saying "now count backwards from 100..."  and I woke up and it was over.  I had bad pain for about 3 days, most of which I spent in a drugged state.  I couldn't open my mouth very wide, so I ate a lot of shakes and pudding.  I started a class the monday after I got them out, and had to stop taking the drugs and was fine, for the most part.

You'll be fine.  If you can have a baby, wisdom teeth should be cake.

  • didn't read any other responses... but here i go. i had 3 cut out. i only had 3 total. i went in got an iv and woke up. i was still numb and felt a little weird having been out. they bleed. they hurt. gotta keep up on the pain meds to make sure. wanted to sleep all day. had to keep up with the water squirting back in there. crap gets all sorts of stuck in there. its gross. woke up the next morning and yawned or something and something popped in there. blood gushed out. it was NASTY and scary! it stopped but freaked me out! it took about a week to start to feel more normal. good luck! i know its scary!
