3rd Trimester

When your water breaks...

I understand it's not a big gush like the movies and is usually just a trickle (if it happens at all), but how long does the trickle last for?

Tonight I was at a wedding and for about 10 secs I felt a runny trickle come out. It was different from my normal discharge and when I went to the bathroom my underware were a little wet as if I peed a little (which I def. did not).

I haven't had any contractions either as far as I know of... but I haven't felt any so far through my pregnancy anyway, even though the doc said I was having them.

Just wondering what you think/know... and sorry for TMI.

Re: When your water breaks...

  • Probably discharge...for many it changes in the end, I've often heard of people saying it's much more liquidy and the quantity is more too.

  • how about you call your OB instead of running over to an internet message board to get medical information.
  • It's continuous.
  • Not TMI.  You don't always have contractions if your water breaks, but if you think it has you should call DR or go to hospital ASAP.

The amount of time of the trickle is different with everyone.

Wow... she is just looking for support. Kinda what this board is about...?

I would suggest calling your OB in case but I am of little help because I have never felt my water break but I wish you the best of luck!

  • mine was a gush
  • Don't worry about TMI.  I don't think that sounds like your water breaking.  But, it doesn't hurt to call your OB.  I would, if I were in your shoes.  This could have been amniotic fluid leakage, but it doesn't sound like your water officially "broke".  You're right, it's not always like the movies, it sometimes comes out much more slowly, but there will be quite a bit of fluid.

It is probably just discharge-- put check with your OB if you really aren't sure.

But, a gush happens with a low break.  A trickle is with a high break and it will usually last longer than 10 minutes.

Ditto...well, a series of gushes, actually. But, since it can be a trickle, give your doc a call.

I once worked with a woman who was pregnant with her third. She had a discharge, thought she had a yeast infection, and made an appointment to see her doc. (This was back in the Dark Ages when Monistat was only available by Rx.) It turned out her water had broken. She was pretty darned shocked - she figured that after 2 kids, she'd know when her water broke!

  • Mines wasn't a gush. . . more of a trickle, but it was continuous to the point where I 'knew' it definitely wasn't just discharge. I soaked through 2 pads by the time I got to the hospital. . . if that helps at all.

ditto.  It is different for everyone, if you are concerned call your dr. or l&d.  Also, I did not have contractions prior to the gush.

  • With my oldest I had several real small leaks.  This time I had several huge gushes...kinda like the way they show it in the movies but I just had more then one.  This time I had no contractions until over an hour after my water broke.  With my first I had contractions right away.  It is different for everyone and for every pregnancy.  If you are concerned call your doctor.
