3rd Trimester

Yay, surprise new car. I'm so happy!

I was practically in tears the other day when installing the infant carseat into my teeny tiny Scion XA (https://images.autobytel.com/cyber/221436/i90525A_1.jpg). I had to push the passenger seat all the way up, just to get it in. Not to mention, I also had DD booster seat in it. I bought it as a single mom 4 years ago for the great gas mileage, but it had served it's purpose and really was wayyy too small for a family of 4.

Anyway, I was laid off in Nov. and had pretty much told myself that I wouldn't be getting a new car for a long time (a tree fell on my Scion during a hurricane and caused frame damage, which means resale value was not good). Plus, we are buying a house under just DH's credit, so I knew he wouldn't be willing to buy a car anytime soon.

Well this morning out of nowhere, DH says "let's go get you a new car". I was like "whatttt the F!!!??"

We ended up getting a used Dodge 2009 Journey from Carmax (https://blogs.edmunds.com/karl/Dodge%20Journey.jpg). They actually bought my car too!! Woohoo. The new car only has 10K miles, so it is practically new, except it was only $14,999 instead of $25,000 brand new. The best part is that I was able to buy it with only my credit (so it doesn't affect the home loan process).

I feel so happy Big Smile I love a good deal! YAY.

  • I was thinking of selling my car to Carmax in order to pay for a down payment on a new car. Would you say they were fair as far as price and everything?

  • Awesome! Congrats on the new car, and the good deal :)
  • That's great!! Congrats.
  • Yay for you! I am in the market for a new car too! A Jetta seems way too small for an infant seat! I figured I'd buy right before I go back to work, just so I don't have to worry about making a car payment on just DH's wages, and my somewhat lower than normal wages while I'm on maternity leave.

I was honestly shocked that we got as much as we did. With frame damage and a major accident, they gave us a pretty fair trade in value - straight from Kelly Blue Book (adjusted for the damage). I honestly thought they would give us next to nothing (it was a super cheap car already). It's definitely worth a shot. The quote is good for 7 days.

  • Woohoo!  That's fun!

I was told at my oil change yesterday that my brakes have cancer.  I really don't want to dump a bunch of money into a 13 year old car, so it looks like we too may be getting a new car.  How did you guys decide on the dodge?

We are just very price conscious right now, which is why we bought used. We wanted 3rd row seating (to grow into) and it was basically between that or a Honda Pilot. We know Honda is the better brand, but it had almost 40K miles and was an '06. This was practically brand new and fit our needs perfectly. We didn't really go there with anything in mind, except price (wanted under $20K and 3rd row seating).

I was worried about that too. I am really frugal compared to DH and didn't want to add some huge car payment right before baby comes. He convinced me (ok, I didn't take much convincing, lol), since he drives a company car and doesn't have to make payments. He said "most people have at least 1 car payment". So, I agreed and am glad that I did!

FWIW, the Jetta will be fine for awhile. I drove that little Scion around for 4 years with DD! It did annoy me that I could never fit my stroller in the car though, LOL.

  • That is awesome!!! DH is being deployed to Afghanistan In November, just about 2 1/2 months after the baby is born, some time before then he is wanting to get me a new car so he doesnt have to worry about me and worry about my current ride breaking down and me being stressed. My current car is a 1999 Honda Accord that I LOVE LOVE LOVE.... but i must say I am excited about getting a new car. I am wanting to get a Ford Flex!! :)
