Vacation help needed: Catalina Island vs Santa Barbara area (hotel recommendations?)

Thanks, ladies! I live in SoCal (I'm a native) but the last time I was in Catalina I was in college and didn't have much $. We want a nice place to stay... any rec's? Same for Santa Barbara. We would like to stay as close to the beach as possible. Oh yeah, DD is coming with us. TIA!

  • The Pavilion Lodge in Catalina is our favorite place to stay, really nice/modern.  We also have stayed at the West Beach Inn in Santa Barbara which was really cute and had a wine and cheese hour every night.  Both hotels are super close to the beach and right in the mix of everything.

  • i was married on catalina we stayed at hotel metropole- cape codish styled, their breakfast is also pretty yummy!

  • Another vote for Pavilion Lodge. Here is a review I wrote. I booked though this site, they offer many packages.

    In Santa Barbara, the Fess Parker Double Tree is a beautiful property.

  • We have stayed at the Avalon hotel and loved it. Catalina is really expensive right now though (we looked into it). Also a lot of the cruise ships are being diverted there from Mexico so it is pretty crowded. I have heard good things about Fess Parker in SB. Also check yelp and then priceline it.
  • Dude, your daughter will LOVE this! Check out El Capitan Canyon in Santa Barbara. We stayed there last year, and it was unbelievable! It's camping -- with a twist! Forget the hassle of pitching your tent. El Capitan has these platform tents with queen-sized beds or cabins with lofts. This is LUXURY camping. There's a BBQ you make reservations at, plus lots of outdoor stuff. It's not far from the beach, and you can get bikes. When we were there, the bikes were free of charge (you just had to request them early). There's other outdoor stuff, but all we wanted to do was lounge around on our bed with the tent flaps open.

    Good luck!
    Lori =)
