BFing and solids question

Aubrey had her 4 month check-up on Friday and the doctor feels like she is eating so much that she is ready to start rice cereal. I nurse in the mornings and she gets pumped milk the rest of the day. So, I know she drinks 5 5.5 oz bottles and then whatever she gets nursing in the AM. She is sleeping through the night and finally growing like a champ.  DH took her to the appointment because I had to work so I couldn't question her doctor a little more. I am really not ready to start her on solids yet so I told DH we'd hold off. What do you ladies think? If you BF, when did you start rice cereal?

Re: BFing and solids question

  • I think it's standard practice for pediatricians to tell people that a baby can start cereal at 4 months.  But there's really no benefit to it (it's just a practice food) and cereal has fewer calories than breastmilk.  There's a lot of good info here: https://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/index.html and https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/early-solid-food-feeding.htm.

Personally, I chose not to start Nate on solids until he was 6 months.  At that time, he was sitting unassisted and he seemed interested (he'd reach for food, watch us eat, etc).  He was not into it at all though.  We tried various purees and softer foods like avocado and sweet potato but he just didn't really care for it.  When he was around 7 months he started to like oatmeal cereal (I never did rice cereal at all) and then he liked puffs too.  He'd eat a little bit of purees but not much.  So at 8 months we started table foods and he did great.  He never really got into purees, but he was very into table foods and he has been ever since!  :)

  • I think most all pedis give the go ahead for solids at 4 months. If you aren't ready and don't think that she is ready then hold off. It sounds like you guys have a great thing going and I wouldn't mess with it quite yet.

We didn't start dd on solids till she was 6 months and that worked really well for us but every baby is different.

  • We didnt BF, but I also suggest Oatmeal over Rice Cereal.  Its easier on digestion.  We started with Rice cereal and had all kinds of gas/constipation issues and switched to oatmal rather quickly and had no more issues.

I will keep that in mind. Thanks!

ECU, I was thinking she needed to be sitting up as well. She can sit pretty well in her Bumbo and her high chair would hold her upright, but those hardly count as sitting up. She does act pretty curious about us eating, but she might just enjoy watching us do whatever we do. I just don't get why doctors tell moms to go ahead and start when the AAP recommends waiting. I hate getting conflicting information.

I think I also thrive on the fact that she is growing so well because of my milk. We struggled with breast feeding so much in the beginning  so I want to enjoy being her whole source of nutrition as long as I can.Smile

  • Ditto the PPs, no need to start before 6 months if you're not ready.  I agree, I don't know why pediatrician's tell you to start at 4 months when the AAP recommends waiting.  We waited until 6 months, and I have no regrets about our decision.  Like you, I really loved watching him grow knowing that I was his sole source of nutrition! :)

Besides, once you start solids, that's just one more thing you have to fit in your day, and plan to pack and bring with you when you go out, etc.

Glad everything is going so well with bf'ing for you guys now - that's great! :)

We also waited until she was past 6 months.  And honestly she ate *very* little for the first few months, to the point that we didn't even try most days, and offered just once a day until it seemed she wanted to eat more.  They didn't really become a key part of her diet until she was round 11 months.  She was giving a lot of *signs* that she wanted solids by 4 months, but they didn't interest her much when we actually gave them to her. :)
