TTC After a Loss

first period after miscarriage

Hi Ladies -

I miscarried naturally a month ago today at 6 weeks.  I have a question about your first period after miscarriage. My normal cycle is, well, pretty normal. I get my period at about 27 days and it lasts for about 4-5. No spotting or anything. This time around, I started spotting about 6 days ago (so if we're starting from the day of miscarriage, it was about 24 days). I basically have just been spotting since then - it was a bit heavier the last two days, but still not a normal flow. The color has also been much darker and browner than usual too, and (sorry if TMI), there have been small clots of blood. I'm just wondering if your first periods were totally normal, or whether you experienced something like this. Also, do you think this means I should wait another month before TTC?

Thanks for any input.

well it doesn't seem like that many people are here today, but i'll answer about my experience.  my first AF (aunt flo) was 42 days after my m/c and has not been the same since.  every cycle is it different, this last one was long and heavy at times with lots of clots and cramping.

it's going to be interesting for you to learn how your "new" period is.  i think you should TTC when you are ready.

    GL, sorry for your loss.

  • I am very sorry for your loss.

My periods have been odd ever since my m/c.  I used to have 28 day perfect cycles, and now, they are anywhere from 27-38 days, usually around 30.

Every month, I start spotting (dark brown, black tar-like blood) about 8 days post ovulation.

My first AF after my m/c wasn't horrible like I was expecting, but it was worse than normal.

Are you in Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine?

  • I also have a 'new period' post mc. Definitely had alot of clots the first 1-2. I've also never had pre AF spotting. I do now! Just give yourself some time to let your body get back to normal.

  • I got my first period 28 days post D&C.  It was very heavy, when my pre-m/c periods were very light.  since then its been a guessing game as to what it will be.  Last month it was short with no cramps, the month before was eight days with cramps the whole time.

When to TTC again is a personal decision, only you know your heart and your body.  Dont make the decision lightly, and talk it out iwth your DH.  GL on your TTCAL journey.

  • That's so interesting - well, I guess our bodies know what they are doing (I hope??).  I feel like I am ready for a healthy pregnancy, but not sure if I can handle another m/c right now, so maybe it is best to wait another month or longer.  OregonPachey, I'm from Portland, OR - looks like you are from Oregon too!
  • My first AF was also 42 days after my MC.  It started on a Friday with light spotting (brown).  I had one (maybe two days) of red and then more spotting until Thursday.  It was barely enough for a panty liner.  I think a lot of ladies have said their AFs have been different since after the MC.  We were going to wait until another AF before TTC, but we've had a few BD and I'm not worried about it.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.

Miscarriage can definitely mess with your cycles - mine have changed (gotten shorter and lighter) since my natural m/c in March. My first period after the m/c was especially wonky - if you look at my chart, you can see the weird temps, etc.

As far as waiting goes, I'd do whatever your doctor recommended and what you're comfortable with; in my case, that was waiting until the second period after the m/c to start trying again, by which time my period had stabilized more and we were a bit more emotionally ready. Yes

  • Mine were always perfectly predictable too. I'm now having my first AFsince natual m/c. The first 3 -4 days were just brown spotting. Then it got really heavy for the past 3 days.

I never had spotting before, and AF never lasted this long before. I would ask your OB about whether you need to wait or not. I did ask mine, and he said we could TTC after this cycle.
