how old does LO have to be

to ride in a stroller?  I was reading somewhere that newborns really shouldn't be in a stroller because it's just another thing that might give them a flat head. ? Um, they said a baby always seems to be laying on the back of its head, whether you are cradling him, if he is in the crib or bassinet, in the carseat, so one shouldn't use a stroller until the baby's bones are stronger.  Has anyone else heard this? Is there another reason LO should be in a strolller till its older?Indifferent

  • They can ride in a stroller right from the beginning....it's fine for them to be on their back (I mean, they are suppose to sleep like this...).  However, concerning the flat head, that is why you should pick baby up, have tummy time, etc.  They shouldn't be laying down at all times.

  • This was one of MANY reasons why I choose to babywear.  DS hardly ever ended up in his infant seat outside of the car.  I always wore him in the sling etc.  We didn't use the stroller consistently until well after 6 months, probably closer to a year.  I do have a stroller that accommodate a todderl and an infant, but I plan to use it for walks/exercise rather than just out and about.

  • Putting your baby in a stroller is fine.

Tummy time helps prevent the flat head thing.

  • Putting a newborn in a stroller is fine.  The risk of a flat head is worst when they go from crib to swing to carseat to stroller all day every day and never are not flat on their backs.  As long as you also hold them for a significant portion of each day they should be fine, play with them, have tummy time, etc.. they'll be fine.  I also use a sling for newborns which helps, although  I live in a city and for longer walks also use the stroller to save my back.

  • Just a note on the flat head thing...

My nephew has been in a helmet to correct his head for the past few months.  The main reason he's had that problem has been because my sister carried him so low, and his head rested on her pelvic bone.

In other words, most of the time, the flat head is not something that could be avoided - her doctor said it's usually something like this, or if parents never introduce tummy time or hold their babies.

So...don't stress about the flat head!!

  • We put our LO in the stroller when she was a week old. We live in the city and don't own a car, so that was really the only way to get around. I did use our Snugli carrier every once and a while, which was very helpful. No flat head here.?

This... I do plan to use the stroller for many things, but it just seems easier to wear baby in his sling when possible.  The travel system is just so large and cumbersome - when he's a teensy newborn, it seems easier to just wear him.  We'll see what I actually end up doing when the time comes...

  • Yeah- we've got a couple of slings and plan to do plenty of tummy time. I also found a head support pillow that had a hole in the back for occassional use. I figure it couldn't hurt.
