1st Trimester

Super Scared and Sad

Hi Ladies....

I don't want to scare you but I am looking for an answers and just can't seem to get one. I went for my first OB visit yesterday and he did the regular check and said everything felt normal, he said I was approximately 6ws. He also ran my HCG levels to compare to those that I had ran on Monday. I left rather happy and pleased...my day proceeded. At approximately 7pm last night as I left from doing the goceries I felt almost like a watery substance come out of down there. As soon as I got in the car I looked to see what the heck it was and there was darkish brown blood that seemed to have flowed out. I came home and peed and like 2-3 more drops fell. I completely freaked out and called my doc. He said that perhaps it's nothing but to "relax" and remain calm until he sees me this Tuesday (my luck this happened during a long weekend). Even this morning I noticed I have dark blood (light) when I wipe. I am so scared and I have been researching the comp for answers but nothing is clear, all I can do is cry. I read about implantation bleeding but I would think it wouldn't not have been that sudden flow (without clots and I have no pain whatsoever) and plus I am supposedly 6w according to the OB. What is going on??? I am so scared...I did everything right.

Quick note: I don't have those crampy feelings I would have so often 1 week ago and my breasts are still quite tender.

any advice? sorry for burdening you all with this, I truly am. Crying

  • many women bleed throughout their pregnancy, and MOST Drs will tell you only to worry if it is bright red, not brown...

  • From what I have gotten from the MAs in the office where I work, dark brown blood is usually old blood left over from your period and not something you need to worry about. They usually don't worry unless it is bright red blood and even then it doesn't necessarily mean m/c. Now of course that isn't a guarantee, but if he said not to worry, I would trust him. HTH, good luck!

I'm wondering when he examined you, if it could have stirred things up. I know some woman experience some light bleeding after. I will keep you in my prayers, try to take it easy and get some rest.

  • "I am so scared... I did everything right."

First, if there were something wrong, it wouldn't be because of anything you did.

Second, you aren't having any cramping, no clots, like your doctor said, just try to relax. I know it's easier said than done.

    GL to you.

  • Spotting brown is common in early pregnancy. I have been spotting on and off for a couple of weeks. I had an u/s the other day that showed a nice strong heartbeat and measuring 4 days ahead (I know the exact date of fertilization due to IVF)

I know easier said then done, but try to relax and take it easy this weekend until you are seen by your doctor. Unless it is heavy flow with cramping, I am sure everything will be okay!

  • From my understanding,as long as it isn't red and isn't combined with cramping or lower back pain, you should be fine.  Relax and try not to stress.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you all for your posts. Please don't allow what is happening to me freak you out. Thank you for your support. I will be seeing him on Tuesday so I will def let you all know what he says. Thank you for your prayers...

I had a big bleeding episode around 6w, and everything was fine. most docs will say that if you are not bleeding through a pad in 1 hour, you do not need to go to the doc or ER.  That it has slowed down is good, and that it is dark is good too. I have on and off brown discharge still - and everything looks fine.  First tri bleeding is very scary but unfortunately very common.  I agree that it's probably that you are bleeding as a result of the exam - that's very common too.

If the bleeding comes back, definitely call your doc.  For now, put your feet up and drink a lot of water.  Dehydration can irritate the uterus and lead to spotting too.

  • Thank you soooo much. It is comforting to know that this has happened to others and they are still going with their pg. Honestly I have lost my appetite but that could also be because of my nerves. Thank you for the advice, I will take it... thank u!!!!
  • I am by no means an expert.

I just thought I'd add that I didn't know I was pregnant and I hadn't missed a period. Turns out that blood was something else I suppose because I am 7w3d and everything so far is going well. It's possible to bleed and be completely fine is my only point.

Good luck at your visit on Tue.

  • I just got home from the ER for something similar. Everything checked out fine. I was freaking out because I had no bleeding with my first. I had been searching online and just about everything I read totally freaked me out and made me more anxious. I called the Women's Center and they told me to go to the ER. They ran my bloodwork, urine analysis, and did an ultrasound and everything was fine. Thank God!

I know it's hard to not worry but try to relax. If your Dr isnt worried, then you shouldn't be either. I had dark bleeding with both pregnancies from 6.5 weeks to 9 weeks and all was and is good. Stay positive.

Ditto everyone else. I have read that about 40% of all women have some spotting in the first trimester, and fewer than half of them will miscarry.

There are lots of reasons why you could have totally harmless spotting that is nothing to worry about, including sex (if your cervix is irritated), a pap exam (ditto), a small harmless hematoma, and for no particular reason at all.

If your doc was concerned he wouldn't make you wait out the long weekend. GL

  • I had something similiar happen....the blod was bright red and I was cramping on my left side with back pain...I was so sad because I thought I was either having an ectopic or a m/c.  Went to the ER and they did the first u/s...everything was prefect...amazing heartbeat and they said nothing was wrong...went to OB next day and he did another ultrasound...he showed me a dark spot behind uterus that was a harmless blood clot (hematoma)...he said that some old blood got trapped behind uterus and I would be spotting for a little while.....baby was doing well though.  I spotted for about a week and now it seems to be done.....

hang in there...I know its very upsetting and nerve racking... I hope all goes well

  • If it makes you feel better I had quite the scare this week, too. On Thursday I had cramping so bad I was doubled over in pain and coudn't even stand up. I just knew it wasn't normal and that I must be miscarrying, and my husband and I were so upset. The doctor couldn't see me until the next day, where the ultrasound showed a perfectly healthy baby and a very strong heartbeat! They explained to me that if you have both symptoms - strong cramping AND bleeding - that usually signals a probem. However, if its just one without the other than its probably normal.
