Every morning when DD gets up at 5:30/6:00am I fchange her then feed her and she falls asleep, or so it seems. Then the fun starts. Normally she is a happy baby but from the time after she is fed in the AM until about 9:30 ish she fusses. I try different things to consol her. When something works it only lasts at the most, 5 min. I have gotten to the point today that I broke down in tears because it seems that I am the only one that sees it because DH is at work, and it's too early for anyone else to behere to see it. Is it just a witching hour, or could this be colic?? It makes me not want to be around her the rest of the day since the morning starts off so badly. The afternoon she is great, it's just the mornings. I try EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING)and nothing keeps her content for more than 5 min. and then she is crying again. There are 2 things I am going to try next week to see if either works. If not, then I think I might have to call the Dr. So, is this colic, or a "witching hour"? This only goes on each morning starting around 7:00am (after eating etc.; please see first sentence of post) but by 10:00am/11:00am she is back to herself and will sleep, eat, play, etc. (basically able to be consoled).
Re: Is it colic or just a "witching hour"?
To my knowledge, how long it lasts is a determining factor in diagnosing colic (crying for at least three hours a day, at least three days a week, for three weeks straight), but it sounds like it may be the start of it. The timing is right, too, at five weeks old.
Have you tried the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD or book? It's kind of a step-by-step science for settling fussy babies.
Good luck!!
Our peditrician said colic is a baby who is unhappy more than 3 hours a day at least 3 days a week for at least 3 weeks in a row. Is she spitting up after her a.m. feeding or is her belly really tight? Have you tried giving her a relaxing bath or taking her for a stroller ride during her unhappy time? Massage, bicylcing her legs, or a tight swaddle might work....I'm just throwing somethings out there?!
Good luck and hang in there! Don't be afraid to put her DD in a safe place and walk away, it's really ok...you need to take care of yourself too.
We actually have the train the trainer DVD. She calms when swaddled, on her side, and swinging/bouncing, but only for a very short while, and then when I put her down, she starts again.
