To save on our energy and water bill, we hand wash most of our dishes and run the dishwasher 1 or 2 times a week. We were running it once a night, but I decided it would be better to had wash.
I'd say about every day and a half.. it's amazing how many dishes we go through now! And sippy cups...

I was watching some energy special on TV a few years ago and they said that it's actually more energy efficient and uses less water to run the dishwasher (as long as it's full) then hand-washing. Just wanted to mention that since I used to think/do the same!

Ditto this. I saw this in a magazine this week. And the best way to save energy altogether is to run your dishwasher (as long as it's full) and instead of letting the drying cycle run, open it and either air dry or dry by hand. They also recommend not pre-rinsing dishes as it wastes water and most dishwashers today can handle the mess (within reason, I'd suspect).
