Toddlers: 24 Months+

recommend discipline/raising toddler book

My little one is just shy of 2 and we just brought a new baby home. My daughter is relatively well behaved, but is starting to listen to us less and less and runs off. We haven't started time outs because the few times we have she didn't seem to understand. I know it's time to try to do them again. Any one have any advice for good reads on toddler discipline/behavior or any advice in general?

  • new baby is a big stresser.  any time a big event happens, children act off.  make sure she's being included in care and getting alone time with each of you.  also, make sure people pay attention to her as well when coming to meet new baby. now there were times when dd would act up when I was trying to feed ds and it was just to get me to put ds down and react to her. no amt of trying to include her would work... she wanted that baby down and away from me.   in those moments, I just turned my back to her.  she didn't care for that much and figured out that if she sat by me, we could all read a story while baby ate.   It's tough early on... but once baby starts reacting to big sis, giggles and smiles and pays attention to her.. and she's the center of the world again, it gets easier.  dc are 19 1/2 months apart... and now they play together so much that many times they don't want me to interfere. lol.

as far as books, our pedi recommended 1,2,3 magic.. which we do use a bit. and I also liked making children mind without losing yours (lots of references to the bible , if you're not religious, be warned... but the concept is a good one, basically discipline, not punishment... so the child learns cause and effect.).

    hang in there.
