Toddlers: 24 Months+

If you have a nanny..

My husband and I are looking at hiring a nanny to come to our home starting this fall to care for our 10 month old son. I am curious about what you pay your nanny (how much per hour/day/week whatever) and where you live.

I have seen on some nanny websites that people are posting that they will accept $10-20/hr and this seems high to me. I have heard of friends who take their LO to a home daycare or have someone come to their home for as little as $40 a day. I am in the Chicagoland area.

TIA!

  • We had a nanny with DS for one day a week when he was younger and paid $15 an hour (in Boston). The average here is $12-$15 an hour - I don't know anyone who pays less than $12.

I think babysitters go for about $10-20/hr... not sure about nannies.. I think it would depend on what you expect of the nanny, and the hours.  I mean, if they are cleaning and doing laundry , you're gonna pay more. most in home childcare situations are one mom, watching one or 2 extra children for the fee.  some feed kids, some don't.  I think this was $50/d here in the cheapest borough of nyc.  the mom was going to watch my ds once a week for about 5hrs.  I would think if it's a mon-fri job, you'd offer a weekly salary, with set hours and expectations and agreement on how to handle vacations.  What were you thinking? (that's not sarcasm, really asking what your ballpark range is)  I would expect to pay a little more than daycare for someone to come to my house and watch dc, especially if they are doing any clean up.

have you tried the chicagoland board?  check local colleges.  check craigslist for an idea of what people are asking as rate.

    good luck.

  • I have a friend that has been a nanny for over 10 yrs.  For about 5 or 6 yrs she was a nanny in the north suburbs of Chicago and made $15 per hour.  Now she has her  own child and watches another child in her own home (instead of going to his house) and charges $8 or $9 per hour.
