At what age is it appropriate to wear a string bikini?

So, it's 90 degrees here. I was driving down the road and saw two girls in their front yard, maybe 10-12 yo in STRING bikinis. I have boys, and actually have never worn a bikini myself, but I don't think I'd allow this until they were out of my control. Am I out of line in my thinking? I actually work with the father of these girls, so I know they are under the age of 12. Thoughts?

  • I am pro itty bitty bikini until they are 5. After that NOOOOOOOOOO. Not until they are out of my house.

that goes for Miles too if he desires a string bikini.

  • They're probably the only people with good enough bodies:)

I am 31 and have 2 sting bikinis-- they are flattering, I maintain, because you can adjust them so as to avoid the dread muffin top or thigh lop-over.?

Good point!  Maybe I'm just jealous that I'll never be able to wear to pieces of cloth tied together out in public! They were dancing around with branches in their front yard taunting the on coming traffic. It's a pretty busy street.

  • I think I would personally be okay with one on an older teenager, but not a younger girl or preteen.

I agree with this. I LOVE some baby fat dimpling out of a bikini. but I do not like the trashiness of an adolescent girl ( or boy) in too little clothing.

  • Hmmm... if they're young enough to be taunting traffic with tree branches, they're young enough that they don't see themselves as particularly sexual creatures yet.  It would probably disturb me more if they were posing/acting in a more adult way.

Still, as the mom of an 8 year old, I'm much more comfortable with "sporty" than "slinky" in my DD's bathing suits.  Unfortunately, "sporty" is hard to find without paying out the nose.  For example, in Target, girls' bathing suits seem to fall into 2 categories: frumpy or sexy.  Come on, Target!  Isn't there a middle ground?

  • the bottoms were string?  I remember in h.s. wearing the triangle top string.. but regular bottoms... at 12, I was still wearing a one piece.  IDK , I don't know if I'd let dd get a string bikini at 12. that's so young.. but they probably don't think anything of it being sexual, I'd be more nervous about the pervs at the beach or public pools.  ya know?  but then again, a perv is a perv is a perv... no matter what the person is wearing, i guess.  still, I hope this topic doesn't come up in 7-9 years.
  • I'm wearing a string bikini right now.

  • My DH & I have this conversation every time we go to a public place where there are kids in bathing suits. IMHO, a bikini (non-string) at maybe 15 is ok. A string bikini is a look-at-my-body thing, so I really don't like seeing them on anyone under the age of 18. I'm terribly old fashioned, I think. I really hate seeing 3 yr olds in bikinis.
  • SD is 14 and isn't allowed to wear one.  If it were up to me, she wouldn't be able to wear one until she is paying her own bills.  I'm not sure what her mom's plans are for that though.

SD does wear 2 piece suits.  Last year, it was boy shorts and the top was thick straps that were hooked to the top not tied.

  • Our rules with my SD was once she could buy it with her money and have some responsibility enough to make sure it did not fall down.  Of course I will steer DD to more modest ones but if she has the body for it I don't think it's a huge deal as long as you teach your DD to respect her body and she is not being slutty...honestly if you say not under my roof she will borrow a friends, your only chance is to teach her what looks nicest on her and for her to have a good sense of self.
