I had mine yesterday and they told me to be prepared to get undressed if they could not get a good view, but they did!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I had an external and 9w. They measured him, we saw his little legs and arms moving. It was awesome. Our tech said it really depends on the tech. She also gave me the heads up not to drink a ridiculous about of water before the 18w ultrasound.
Yes. I had one at 8 weeks and all we could see was a blob really, but we could see the heartbeat and hear it.

I had to have an internal ultrasound in order to see the baby and hear/see the heartbeat. They tried the external first, but because I am a little overweight and I have a tilted uterus they had to go in vaginally.
Yeah. All my ultrasounds have been external and we were able to see everything starting at 5weeks.
If you are a smaller framed person, then they will probably want to try the abdominal ultrasound first and then if they can't see anything then they will do vaginal. Although some offices just do vaginal as standard for the first 12 weeks. GL. I prefer vaginal as you get a clearer picture though.

My u/s at 6w1d was external, but the nurse told me they would try that first, and if they couldn't see anything, they'd do an internal. Couldn't see much with external--just the gestational sack and a tiny little jelly bean with a little flickering HB. But that was enough for me!
I had an external done @ 7weeks 6days at a specialist office and It was a perfect image, HB and all, but it's probably because of his machine. All my others were done by my reg. OB and they were internal.
Re: can they do external u/s at 8weeks?
yes they can-
but the baby just looks like a blob-
(We don't have the tools at our clinic for internal ultrasounds- all Ive ever gotten were external ones-)

I got the dildo cam for my 8w u/s
Ha, me too. I love that they fill the little condom on the end with lube.
So romantic and safe!
