Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Were any of you raised around guns?

I was raised, and still live in a rural community. ?I was always raised around guns. ?My grandpa and uncle run a trap shooting place and all of the men in my family have always hunted. ?My Dh hunts and I trap shoot from time to time, so yes, we both have a gun. ?

Guns were not a taboo subject in my family. ?We all knew how to safely operate a gun. ?I paid absolutely no attention to guns when I was a child. They were something that grown ups used to go hunting or shooting and grown ups did not mess with in an irresponsible manner. ?Never did we view guns as something people would use to?maliciously?be violent.

  • i was raised in a rural area around guns, have fired guns myself. but now i live in a big city where guns are used primarily to kill people.

one example out of hundreds that happen every week here: someone was shot in the head waiting for their car at the valet at the mall in beverly hills.

Ya, see it is so different depending on the area. ?As you probably gathered when you were living in the rural area, gun usage isn't even thought of in that way. ?KWIM??

  • I associate guns with crime.  I don't know many people that use them to hunt and any time I talk about/hear about guns it's usually because there was another shooting in my town.
  • yes I was. My dad was a police officer so there were guns in the house. He showed us how to use them and how dangerous they were if used improperly. We have guns in our house and plan to teach our kids how to use them responsibly...but we do have a gun safe to keep them locked so there are no accidents

  • I live in a suburban area, My dad had a gun they kept in their bedroom for security. It was behind the dresser. I never went near it. My DH has four guns. We will be purchasing a gun safe for them soon. For now they are stored in their cases high out of reach.

  • Yes, i was. My step dad was a police officer and a hunter! He taught us all about the safety aspects though. We knew NOT to even touch the gun safe though. Now my FI and i have guns and we will teach dd the same things about safety and that they are NOT toys. Plus, i live in CO...most people here DO have a gun!

  • My mom had a handgun in her nightstand drawer when I was growing up. ?I knew about it, knew where it was, but never did anything with it b/c I knew of the dangers...she taught me. ?DH grew up with guns too. ?He started hunting with his dad at age 6. ?He also knew the dangers of guns. ?We have a gun, loaded, in one our chest drawers - it is out of reach and we will teach our children about them.

  • Yep, my Dad hunted. The guns were kept in a locked gun safe and i knew not to mess with them. I helped my dad reload shells (a process where you recycle the plastic shells, this has nothing to do with actual guns). It was fun. He took me trap shooting when I was old enough. I'd go hunting with him, although I didn't shoot. I knew all of the basic safety rules associated with guns.

Guns were for hunting, not for violence against people.

  • I'm from MN, and my dad hunts. He would always show us the gun when he got back from hunting and explain how dangerous they are if they are not used properly (for hunting). He always showed us that there were no bullets in the gun before anything else. Then they were put in their cases and locked away. I have 2 sisters, and none of us had any interest in them except for the night he came home from deer hunting.

My DH hunts too. We will be purchasing a safe when the time comes for the guns to come to our home, they are at the IL's in a safe.

My husband wants to teach our son gun saftey first, then the enjoyment of hunting. His family has a farm in WI, so eventually he will be around guns.....but first and foremost they are not toys, and are very, very dangerous if used wrong.?

  • This reminded me of a fond childhood memory. My Dad would clean his guns in the kitchen after a hunting trip. I used to sit with him while he did it because i liked to watch and I loved the smell of the cleaning solution. If I smell it now I feel like I'm 5 years old again. lol

  • I was - my grandma had them.  However, I only saw a gun once as a child.  She kept them away from us.  We plan to teach B gun safety and possibly get a hand gun for safety.
  • yep.  i'm from NM and nearly all my family there hunts and my uncle and cousins are state cops.  and i completely believe in the right to bare arms (i'm a very liberal so this comes to a shock to some).  but the thing is, our guns were always locked and unloaded until hunting season.

now that i'm in an urban area i agree with OP - no one is hunging in nyc and the only people that typically have guns are cops and criminals.  i personally think it's much to easy to acquire a gun, but i do not think it should be illegal or anything.

  • Yes. My Grandpa was a Narcotics officer and then a detective and all of the men in my family are hunters and target shooters.

  • Growing up we NEVER had guns in the house, and on the off chance one of my uncles would come over and have one on them (2 police officers) my mom made them leave it in the car. She is VERY afraid of guns...which rubbed off on me. When I attended the police academy I was super nervous about the handling and shooting guns. As I became more familiar with them, I realized that the guns are not necessarily the problem, it is the people who are careless or unfamiliar with them that are the problem. I am still trying to get my mom to go shoot with me, and I intend to teach DD about guns and gun saftey as well.

  • Yes, I was raised around guns and they were in the house.

My parents are divorced and at my Dad's house I knew where his guns were (he was in law enforcement). He showed us where they were and said if we EVER touched them we were grounded and in deep shiit. He showed us at an early age (elementary school) and we could care less. Actually we were too scared to touch them!

At my Mom's house my Step Dad is a huge hunter. Taught us how to hunt and shoot guns. We knew where his guns were (in the closet downstairs). We never touched them unless we were hunting. Again, too scared and could care less.

  • Yes. We lived in a very unpopulated area in the mountains and we had guns for protection and wild animals. I had no care to learn about them until I was older. They were locked up and my dad cleaned them in his shop. When I got older he and I would go target practicing together. I loved it!

I dont own a gun, neither does my H. We have no reason to or desire.

  • I was. ?I have a very strict view of guns, but even in high school at FFA camp they had a gun range for the students that I used.

DH & I actually had a big fight about guns a few weeks ago. ?We finally came to a solution, and I'm starting to realize guns don't kill people... people kill people. ?And if they didn't have a gun they'd use something else. ?All guns in our house are locked up and each have a gun lock that cannot be taken off without a key.
