We bought last year's version of this: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2970307 (the parent units look different and it's royal blue instead of turquoise, but that's the only difference I could find when comparing in store -- and ours was on sale)
We set it up and tested it last night.
The movement pad has to go on a hard surface under your crib/cradle/bassinet mattress -- so we used a piece of the box that our crib came in and trimmed it down slightly so it would sit on top of the springs, then put the movement pad down and the mattress on top of it and it worked perfectly. You don't have to go out and buy a board if you've got a good piece of cardboard around.
We first tested it by setting the timer on our bouncy seat and turning the motion on and putting it in the crib. The timer would go off, and 20 seconds later the alarm on the monitor would sound. We'd heard that ceiling fans can cause false alarms or no alarms, so we tested it with the bouncy seat and the ceiling fan at all three speeds and it worked perfectly. We then tried it without the bouncy seat and with the ceiling fan on highest speed, and it didn't cause any vibrations for the monitor to pick up. It immediately alarmed without anything on the mattress moving around.
The sound quality of the parent units is just okay. Not any better or worse than most standard units. A little static-y, but okay. If you want an audio only monitor, the best we've tried so far (we've tried several and returned several) is the Safety 1st High Definition Digital Monitor. It was crystal clear. But it was important for us to have the movement monitor as well (a friend's baby died of SIDS and it scares the tar out of me), so we with this instead. I've seen several of these listed on ebay NIB, so if you're interested and don't want to pay BRU prices, check there. They also have it cheaper with just one parent unit. We got two because the nursery is the opposite end of the house, it's nice to have one charged and one ready to go, or be able to take one outside and have one inside.
Anyway, for those of you planning for infants, I hope this is helpful!!
Re: Product review: Angelcare Deluxe Movement Monitor
The alarm only sounds if your little one is NOT moving. It is sensitive enough to detect heart and breathing (from what I can tell)...we have only had false alarms in the case that our DD rolled too far away from the base (centered in her crib).
we have the newer version and right now are using it as an audio monitor but he is starting to scoot around a bit in crib and likes tummy sleeping, so soon we will set up the movement part.
thanks for the test/review,
