Back massagers while pregnant??

I realize this could either be a ridiculously stupid question, or a really good one. Is it safe to use one of those powerful brookstone massagers on my back at night? The baby is just developing it's brain, and those vibrating waves really travel through the whole body - I was considering calling the OB, but don't wanna embarass myself at a place I have to show my face for the next 34 weeks so thought i'd just do it here. haha! What do you girls think?

Re: Back massagers while pregnant??

  • I'd use one... I really don't think that you'll be doing any damage to your baby by using a back massager.

  • I don't want to make you paranoid, but my acupuncturist said no massages while pregnant, especailly the shoulder area. Supposedly, there are certain trigger points on your body that are linked to miscarriages.  You can take or leave the info, I won't be offended. Just relaying some info.
  • You can use them, it won't harm your baby, as those types of massagers typically do not increase the blood flow.

  • I was told that any massages in first tri were a no no?
  • My OB said it was fine to use on my shoulders, just not to use the heat setting for more than 15 minutes. I didn't ask about the lower back, but just because of my own paranoia, I don't use it on the lower back.

This is correct to a certain point... the massagers unless you have something that will literally release a trigger point are not going to cause harm because first off: the causes of miscarriage early in pregnancy and the reason for not having massage during pregnancy are mainly because the increased blood flow and possibility of toxins being released in the blood. trigger points and/or deep tissue massage is contraindicated during the entire pregnancy as well as post pregnancy for 3 months. Mainly due to the toxins being released.

  • My midwife encouraged massage by a licensed therapist at any point in pregnancy as a healthful thing.

I would expect that using a massager would be fine, but really . . . either ask your OB or use common sense.  You are very likely to get conflicting info on here.

  • I'm a CMT... so if you have any questions let me know (Certified Massage Therapist)
  • have you asked your dr?
  • I went in for a 90 minute massage yesterday. He said trigger points three inches above the knees, around the ankles and deep in shoulders could cause uterine contractions.

He said he had actually helped women go into labor in 3rd tri by putting pressure in these places.
