Breastfeeding

Can I go 6 hours without pumping?

So I am planning on returning to work about 9 weeks after the birth of my baby.  I am also planning on breastfeeding and pumping while I'm at work.  The only problem is that I am a teacher and have class from 7:45-1:45 straight, with a short lunch break at noon.  I'm planning on feeding at about 6am, so my question is will I be ok not pumping for 6 hours (from 6am-noon?).  I'm really worried about running out of my supply if I go that long on a regular basis and also that I will be in pain if I go that long without pumping... Any suggestions???

  • I would try to get it in at noon.  After 6 hours, I'm leaking milk and have rock hard boobs.

  • Can you pump in the car on the way to work?

I know a lot of teachers do that.

  • I'd be leaking and probably hurting by 6 hours.

  • I would pump right when you get to work if you can, or in the car on the way.  6 hrs is tough

I've never had any problems going 6 hours between, but then DD has always just nursed on one side at a session, so it's typically 6 hours between nursing sessions on each side.  I would definitely wear nursing pads though.

  • I would try pumping during your lunch, when I worked after ds#1 was born it literally would only take me 10-15 to pump out 4 ounces from each boob.  I stopped pumping when ds#1 was 6 months old.

Make sure to lock your classroom though while pumping:)  I taught part time and would still need to pump once a day.
