I am evil and purchased my dog from a pet store

So let me know if the stoning should commence once I tell this story....

We went to the pet store to pick up turtle food. They were selling puppies and of course, I stopped to look at them (with no intention of ever buying one). I noticed this dachshund had a price listed as being marked down numerous times. She was sitting in this tiny little cage looking so sad. I asked why she was so cheap (which for a pet store is a very relative term). She had mange, a stomach worm, and kennel cough. Her ears were hairless and she couldn't stand on her front paws because her muscles had atrophied so much. Her tail was between her legs and she was shaking. Turns out, they never really walked the dogs because "there was no grass anywhere" and this one had been living in a small crate for 2 full months. Oh, and the girl "wasn't really sure" who was in charge of feeding them. I bought her on the spot, called the local SPCA about what the pet store was doing and the rest is history.

I'M SUCH A HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PERSON!!

    I didn't even know pet stores still sold puppies. Poor animals.

    And that's why I can't go in stores that sell pets! Like I said below, it's the pet store owner who should be stoned, not you. It sucks though because the only way to stop them selling these poor dogs is to stop buying them - and the poor pups suffer. But I wouldn't have been able to resist helping the pup either. Hope she's a happy doggie now!

    I bought my dog from a pet store in the mall - he was 6 months old and marked half off . . .   he had kennel cough too and I feel like I did rescue him . . .   I know it's bad to buy from them but I couldn't stand seeing a 6 month old puppy still sitting in his cage!  He's kinda a nut but I love him and I can't go into the pet stores and look at the dogs or I'll want to take them all home!

    Totally not related, but what kind of turtle do/did you have? I've had 3 red eared sliders. I LOVEEE turtles and would love to have one again. I just don't want to deal with the high maintenance and cleaning the tank every week.

    It was a mom and pop type pet store - they are now out of business (as far as I know). Bastards.

    Toaster - I have a fierce beast of a red eared slider!

    Poor thing.  They have shut down quite a few puppy mills around here.  A few of my coworkers foster animals as they come through.  It is so sad to see some of those dogs.  They are emotional wrecks.

    The way to shut down pet stores is to shut down puppy mills.

    I work in an animal hospital and someone came in w/ a dog that they rescued from a mill. The owners of the mill abandoned ship- they cut up all of their chickens and threw them in with the dogs and just left. So sad! People should suffer the way the make others suffer.

    I have a picture with her at home, but I was super duper stoned in the pic, so I might not ever post it. LOL

    I am glad you did.  Pet stores will never go away; and these poor animals need homes too.  I feel so sad for them in those stupid cages.
