my brother is mad at me. your opinion please

ok first off, i admit i am terrified of my DS getting sick. i understand that one day he will but this is my first child and i am completely a nervous wreck about it . with that said my mom's bday celebration is this saturday. one of my brothers has 2 daughters. one was terribly sick last week with a bad cough ( not strep) and a fever . she then gave it to her little sister ( 4 years old). the 4 year old no longer has a fever but has a cough. i told him this morning that i wont be attending the party because i do not want my DS to get sick. he thinks i am being crazy. am i??? i mean it was a really bad cough/fever his kids had. would u bring your 4 month old?

  • how long has his youngest been without a fever? ?if it's over 24-48 hours, i'd go because most likely, she's no longer contagious. ?further, i would take an extra precaution and not let her touch your baby.

  • Well, as they both seem to be over it, yes, I would bring my 4 month old.  A cough is a cough- not necessarily contagious.

If nothing else, I'd just keep my baby away from the one who is presently coughing.

  • I think you might be going a bit overboard. At this point, I'm not sure the kids are even contagious anymore, depending on what they had.

But, I send my kid to daycare, the proverbial petri dish for all germs big and small.

  • Can you stop by without your LO for a little bit? I was told to have DS avoid other sick kiddies for 48 hrs after a fever is gone for a bacterial infection, and 1 week after the onset of fever for a viral infection.

I would probably stop by to say hi, hold DS the whole time & just not let anyone touch him.

  • While you might be going overboard, I can't tell you that I wouldn't be. I'm a self-admitted germ freak and my brother's kids are ALWAYS sick. We avoid them when they have stuff going around :)
  • thanks ladies.

she had the fever on monday. i would go and not let her touch himbut of course she never listens to me ( her sister does). i will probably just go alone for a bit. thanks again.

  • I would go. She shouldn't be contagious at that point, I don't think. I understand, though. There is nothing worse than a baby who is so stuffy he can't eat.
