Those Who Got an Episiotomy

How long before you felt completely healed? My follow-up appt is going to be at 8 weeks instead of 6 so I'm wondering if I should "play if safe" (poor DH) until then.

I looked down there for the first time since I had her today and I still saw stitches....I had a bunch. =/

  • I had a 2nd degree cut.  I got the nod from the doctor at 6 weeks and I had been feeling perfectly fine since 2 weeks pp, but oh man, the first time hurt so bad.  We didn't try again until 9 weeks and it was MUCH better.  I would wait if I were you.  It is worth it to let it heal.  As for "poor DH," feel free to engage in other activities.  Wink
  • I would wait. You will still be sore for a little while longer. It was a couple months til sex didn't hurt. Especiallly since you can still see the stiches, wait.
  • I had an episiotomy and a tear. ?I felt MUCH better by week 5, DH and I waited until week 8 to have sex. ?It wasnt too bad.

  • I had an episiotomy w/ a 2nd degree tear and at 7 weeks we did the deed an it hurt but it was still good.  If you had more than a 2nd degree and still feel sore, I would wait longer.  My friend had a tear and episiotomy w/ a 4th degree tear and it took them 3/4 months.  GL
  • A long time.  We didn't even attempt sex until I was 10 weeks.  It hurt a lot.  I felt pretty normal down there except for sex.  Sex didn't start feeling good until 6 months, and it still can be uncomfortable sometimes.

However, I had a major episiotomy. It was essentially the same as a 4th degree tear.

  • I didn't have an episiotomy but had a tear. I felt better by about 2-3 weeks. At my 6 week appt my midwife said go ahead but she could still see a suchure (sp?). We finally did the deed at 7 weeks - but used lube (because the midwife said that the mini-pill makes you dry) and it felt just fine.

  • I'm still sore down there, I can't think about doing anything yet!!! I haven't looked even though I wanted too... I have a 6 week appt.

  • I had a nice big episiotomy & was lucky to have a really quick recovery. At 6 weeks pp, my OB could hardly even see where the cut had been. Sex for the first time, however, was excruciating -- I was crying & we had to stop. Not going to lie, it was almost as painful as the birthing experience. If you're still feeling sore at all, I would keep DH happy with a bj.
  • I would wait.  I attempted once a few weeks ago, that lasted about 1 second and I couldn't take it.  When I went in for my pp check they gave me some estrogen cream to put on the scar.  Last time I looked I could still see the strings of my stitches.  I was thinking that we would give it another go this week but I'm sick so I'm going to wait until next week.
