So I was at the gym with DH this morning running on the treadmill (which happens to face the front window/parking lot) when I see this guy who clearly wasn't handicapped pull into the handicapped spot. Not only did he pull into the spot but he pulled in at an angle so that no one could park next to him. That's a huge pet peeve of mine (both the angled parking and more importantly, able bodied individuals parking in a handicapped spot.) Apparently the guy is a personal trainer.
Anyway, he leaves his car and comes inside when all of a sudden his car starts rolling backwards. At first I thought someone was in the drivers seat, then I realized HE got out of the drivers seat. So I start screaming as I'm running on the treadmill "car" "rolling" "car" "moving"--the only thing that would come to my head! DH was standing behind me facing the opposite direction and thought I was yelling "car stolen" so he runs outside. Next thing I know I see the owner sprinting through the gym (it's a super small gym) and running outside. He stands behind the car with DH and pushes it forward just before it rolled onto the busy street. It was classic. I figured it was karma for the jerk--someone's way of telling him to park straight in a regular spot!
That's all, just had to share. ![]()
Re: Forgot to tell you all my gym story
wow... scary. DH to the rescue!
Just an FYI... some people who don't look disabled are disabled and really need the handi-capped parking.
I have a very severe back condition that can cause severe pain and was granted the handicapped parking. Granted I don't use it unless i really need to (when I have pain). Luckily, I have been in good shape for the past year. But it really came in handy six years ago when I suffered so bad during my pregnancy. I have actually had people say, "you don't look handicapped, why do you need the spot"- meanwhile, I am in severe pain.
Oh, I totally understand that. My mom is in the same boat, but like you, she only uses it when she needs it. If she isn't in pain (her knee) or the condition isn't bothering her, or if there is a spot right next to the handicapped spot (like there was in the this case), she doesn't use her pass so that someone who needs it can take it. And I really don't think that someone who is running into the gym, running out of the gym, and is there at the gym for personal training is in need of the spot. It was clear he was just parking in that spot and in that style (across two spots) to be a jerk. At least IMO.
Thanks. Luckily I have been blessed with a pain-free year.
I also have a handicapped parking permit, but looking at me you would never know it. There have been several times when Ive HAD to park there and gotten out of my car and people just stare at me. I know theyre thinking "Theres nothing wrong with her!"
I have a severly damaged nerve in my face and cold wind effects it tremendously. During the winter when I need to go out to the mall or something I will park in the handicapped spot and run inside. I need to be able to get inside as fast as possible before the pain sets in. If I saw myself getting out of the car and running inside, I would be thinking the same thing too!
I never ever ever use it when i dont have to.

What a d*ck! I would have let it roll!
But wouldn't running in your case hurt even more? More wind, so to speak. I get that there are exceptions, but I hardly think this guy was one of them. He was so much of a jerk that he parked in two spots for goodness sake. Of course, he could be an exception, just like anyone else I guess. In any event, I would have laughed even if he hadn't parked in the handicapped spot.
