NBR: How to get rid of fruit flies?

We've got fruit flies everywhere and they're driving me nuts! How do you get rid of them?

Re: NBR: How to get rid of fruit flies?

  • hmmm, someone on the main board posted about his awhile back.  you're supposed to put out a bowl of something, vinegar maybe??  not sure, maybe it was something else.

  • Great post.  I used to know the answer to this but I cant remember.  Like carlnip, I know you put a bowl of something out.  I got an email the other day, saying to keep misqutoes away, spray listerine.  Interested to see if that one works.
  • I drop mine to the counter with Lysol disinfecting spray and then wipe them up.

  • A bowl of wine usually works. I find red works better than white. They are atracted to the sweetness, get drunk, then drown. You will have to replace it every other day or so, otherwise a film forms that they can stand on. HTH!

lol, that makes me laugh for some reason. I can picture you (even though I've never seen you before!) spraying Lysol around the kitchen like a little gun ;)

I wonder if that would work with homemade vinegar/water cleaner? That's all I've got right now.

  • Yep - its a bowl of vinegar on the counter

  • I amused both by the "drop mine to the counter with Lysol" comment and the drunk flies drowning in wine comment.?

We had a few flies in our bathroom last week, and I shot at them with my hairspray or trapped them beneath the tissue box til DH got home to deal with them.

I'll try the wine trick next time! ?

  • Thanks ladies! I've got a bowl of vinegar and a bowl of red wine sitting on the counter. Can't wait for those suckers to be GONE!
  • the thought of drunk bugs cracks me up.....come on fruit flies, party at libby's house, woot woot!!

I bet it would! The Lysol doesn't kill them instantly, just saturates their wings rendering them defenseless to fly.
