BFing - Help!!

Today DS has started SCREAMING when I put him to my right breast.  He does just fine on the left, so I don't think it's reflux.  I did get a new bra, so there's a possibility that something on the bra was rubbing him.  I'm going to try nursing without it on next time and see if that fixes the problem.  But has anyone else had this issue?  To say it's driving me nuts is putting it lightly.

  • Is your left breast the bigger producer? It could be that the right side is not as big of a producer or vice versa. Kinley much prefers the left because the letdown is more forceful and she does not have to work as hard.

  • I agree with spideyswifey. Will definitely prefers one breast to the other. When he's tired or fussy, he'll flat out refuse to nurse on the side that produces more and has a more forceful letdown. I usually end up giving in, pumping that side he's refusing and letting him eat on the other side.
  • My DS prefered my left side over right.  He wouldn't cry or anything on the right, but he definitly tried to always be on my left (wouldn't nurse as well on my right, complained a bit, didn't have as good a latch etc).  However another thing to consider is a possible ear ache.  DS had an ear ache/ infection with no fever (or at least not one I knew of) and was really unhappy nursing when the ear was down or being pressed on.  So you might want to see if that is a possiblity.  I hope it gets better soon- GL.

  • you can always try priming the right one. just sorta squeeze the nip a but and milk should come out flying. the scent and milk on it already might help. But I agree with Jess it could be an ear infection and being on his side might make him feel weird/sick.

  • The first time that happened to me, I had a plugged duct and then got Mastitis. The pH or taste of the milk changes with infection and the baby doesn't like it sometimes. So be on the lookout for any firm spots in your breast.

  • Thanks for the tips ladies.  DS nursed just fine on that side all night, so I think it might be what Spidey and Libby suggested.  The right side is the bigger producer and he doesn't have to work very hard to get the milk.  Guess yesterday he was just being SUPER lazy...and stubborn.
