Because she doesn't want to have people ask her and her daughter what Ellie is short for all her life. And it's nice to have a more formal option as an adult.
To answer the question- I think of it as a nickname but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it were one's full name. It could be short for Eliana. I love that name.
I'd name her Ella, Elaina, Eleanor... there are sooo many options... you can still call her Ellie. That way, she has a more formal name that looks more professional on a resume, etc., someday.
I have an aunt named "Vicki" and my DH has an uncle "Kenny". (Those are the names on the birth certs!!). They go by Victoria and Kenneth now. Funny, eh?
Our daughter is Elizabeth and we call her Ellie. We knew people would want to short Elizabeth and we love Ellie but also wanted her to have a formal, more professional name, too.
Our first child, who is almost 13, is just Ellie, not a nickname. Her middle name is Danielle. I know a girl who's name is Ellison and they call her Ellie. I really like that too.
My DD's name is Ellie and we personally love it! It fits her perfectly. We sometimes call her El. Also, no one has asked us what it is short for either. If you do want to do a more formal name I think Eleanor or Elliana.
I just wanted to add that I had a little girl in daycare named Brielle, and she went by Ellie. I like Ellie as a stand alone name, and I love Elliot for a girl. Super cute.

Gook Luck!
My DD is also Ellie short for Ellen. We never call her Ellen. It is a family name so that is why we went with it. No one ever asks if it is short for anything. PS I know a ton of Ella's.
Re: Ellie? nn or full name?
If you like Ellie, what not just name her that?

Ellianna.
Yes exactly
This would annoy me
I don't like it as a full name.
I like it as a nn for Eleanor, Elisabeth, Elsa, Ella, Ellen, Elena, or Eliana.
I think it's a nickname.

What about just Elle? I LOVE that as a full name. Ellie is a cute nickname, IMO.
We have it on our list, NN for Eleanor.
I personally like it as a stand-alone name, but I also like any of the above suggestions as a full name, except Ella.
Ditto?
Definitely sounds like a nn to me.
This.

It works great because we love both options!
I like Ellie by itself, but if you want a longer name, these are the ones I've heard of.
My sister was going to use Elliott and nn Ellie or Ella.
I know an Eleanor that goes by Ellie (and she's in her 70's if that helps so it can carry to adulthood).
Elizabeth

I know I'm a little late responding but...
