I tried my friends Ergo the other day and am thinking i may prefer a mei tai, but i've yet to try one. any opinions on the mei tei versus the ergo?

 thanks!

  • butting in---I used a Baby Hawk and thought it was great but it was the only brand of that style I used.

My dd #1 was very heavy at the time and it felt fine on my back. I think she was about 14 months old.

  • I'm butting in too. Do you think mei tei's are more user friendly than the moby? Do they support a NB's head? I like my moby ok, but I find it to be a slight hassle  to tie and get DD in and out of and it's sorta hot to wear.

  • MrsChristmas, those were the exact reasons i was looking into getting a mei tai. i loved my moby for when dd was really little. but i could only wear a tank top underneath cause i'd get so hot. and i want something that is a little more portable and easier to put on. on the babyhawk website it looks like the headrest would support a NB head. but maybe m_and_m can give more details.

do you know anything about this carrier?  it does not havve many reviews online.

i saw it when i was looking for prices on Ergos.  i like the facing out option that the ergo does not have.

  • Babyhawk: Not a fan, personally. With my miniature child (<20#) they're not too bad, but I wore Taytee's DD in a back carry on a walk and my back was killing me after a half mile. This was maybe 6 or so months ago, so I *think* she was around 24#. I just don't think they offer enough support.

MT vs Ergo (and other SSC): I prefer MT's, because they are infinitely adjustable, you have more options on how to wear your straps, I don't trust webbing and buckles as much as I trust my ability to tie a secure square knot, and SSC's are less flattering with the way they go across your body (both waist and shoulder straps). A lot of people LOVE their Ergo's, as well as Beco, Olives & Applesauce, Patapum, etc. I think it's really a personal preference thing and wouldn't say one is better than the other overall, just that one is better for me. However, I like the scandi style MT's that are almost a cross between a MT and a SSC.

MT vs Moby: It still does require tying, but less so. The thing I liked better about the wrap was being able to put it on before I left the house and then just popping her in and out when I got to where I was going. You can't really do that with a MT- you have to at least untie and retie the shoulder straps, which is more involved than the waist. Some are okay for newborns, like the ones with a headrest. I personally don't like them until a baby has good head control and is big enough to be able to spread their legs around your waist as opposed to frog legging. Some people do like them with NB's though, I just don't thnk they are as secure. I would say age 4 months, really.

Lillebaby: Front facing is not a good feature, really. It is not good for their hips and spine, and once they get heavier it is very bad for your back. At a certain age babies become okay with facing in instead of out, because they can swivel their head well enough to look around no matter how you face them. It is also not ideal in the way it forces their backs to be straight. In the facing in position babies will curl their backs up like they do in the fetal position, which is what you want them to do. Or at least want them to have the option of doing, and they can't do that when facing out. And the heavier baby thing... It changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of strain on not only your shoulders and neck, but your lower back as well. In short, being able to face a baby out is not a feature you should look for, but if you like the carrier otherwise and it gives a good "seat" that puts them in a sitting position instead of dangling (Bjorn, Snugli, Lascal) then go for it.
