PUL diaper sewing, what did I do wrong?

The diaper I made is leaking at the seams in the legs.  I've put it through the hottest wash and dry I could get.  I'm thinking it's the thread.  What should I be using?  Help.  I love this PUL.

Re: PUL diaper sewing, what did I do wrong?

  • All I've heard is polyesther thread and ballpoint needles for PUL.  I have no experience though.  This is what scares me about sewing PUL myself.

  • I did use a brand new ball point needle.  So, I'm covered there.  Is it supposed to be 100% polyester thread?
  • I think so, but I've never looked to see if such a thing exists, but it sounds right.

  • yes, you have to use 100% polyester thread.  cotton covered polyester will still wick.

  • Yep, 100% polyester is what I heard too.  I use Guterman thread, I think it's pretty popular for diaper making.
  • Yes 100% - any cotton and it will wick through the cotton. You can buy another brand other than Guterman. My hancock doesn't carry the polyester guterman for some reason but they have another brand and I get that.

  • You definitely want 100% polyester thread.  I absolutely love Gutermann.  It's pricey, but soooo worth it, IMO.  Also make sure that you're using the thinnest gauge needle ball point needle you can find.
  • It's a size ball point needle.  Is that good?

  • There should be numbers on the package -- what do they say?
  • Size 14.  Sorry, I don't know where my brain was.  I thought I typed the size.
  • That's pretty big.  I usually use a 10 or 12.
