1st Trimester

Daycare

How many of you have started looking at daycares?  I'll probably need daycare starting in March/April.  Is it too early to look or reserve a place?

Re: Daycare

  • no no. a lot of places have wait lists!

  • not too early.

start as soon as you can. (They fill up fast!)

  • Not us, we are not using daycare
  • I just started looking online today to get some numbers of places close to me.  Not too many.  (scary)
  • hmm...yes we went last week and they asked us why we waited so long!  We are on a very very long waiting list and even though I'll need them by April 2010 they said that MAYBE they will have an opening in Sept. 2010.

so to sum it up...it's not too early!

  • It's a good idea to look around, get prices, and visit places to see who you feel most comfortable with.

  • We're going to start looking at daycare facilities in just a few weeks, as soon as I hit the 2nd trimester. The ones in our area have waiting lists.

We're also going to work up a budget to see if we could afford in-home daycare so that I might present some alternate work schedule options to my boss (i.e. work four 10-hour days, work from home one or two days a week, etc.) This would really be our preference, assuming we can afford it and my boss is willing to work with me. So, we'll start working on that during the 2nd trimester as well so that, if it pans out, we can start advertising for and interviewing nannies in the 3rd tri.

Honestly, the places around here don't seem to be nearly as crowded or demanding as what I've heard from other areas. So no, we'll wait a while.

I've started looking, a few of the places I've called had no waiting list and a few were completely booked until March of 2010.  So I'm going to go ahead and start really looking in case one of the long-wait list places is my favorite. But I do feel kind of weird/silly looking this early.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

  • I am not using one. But it would not hurt because some do have a waiting list. You may have to interview a few before you're happy.

  • I've started to make a list and get prices.  I have it narrowed down to 3.  I'll probably call and make appts to go and visit them in the next couple of weeeks.

  • Absolutely not!  The place I'm taking DS for mothers-day-out in the fall has a 10 month waiting list!
  • I called around and some people have an 8 to 6 month waiting list.  I am going to look as soon as school is out (next week)

  • I subscribe to a website for my area that lists cost & availability, so we have daycare included in our post-baby budget.

I am hoping we won't need child care until August 2010, so I'm not calling just yet (plus, I think we may do a nanny until our baby is a toddler anyway).

Love this picture of your dog, so true!!!  ha ha

  • the earlier the better depending on where you live.  first time i started in august for an april opening and out of 20 some places ONE had an opening for an infant-i was looking liscensed in home versus daycare center, but they all fill up because infant to adult ratio has to be very low.   good luck
  • Ideally, I would prefer to stay home for at least a year with the baby (fingers crossed) but I am lucky enough to be the AD of a child care center so I don't have to go through the process of researching centers and finding the best fit for us. The baby will be in the same building as me all day. I can check that task off of our ever growing to-do list!!!

Depending on the area, many places do have wait lists for infants so it is a great idea to begin early and as soon as you decide where you want your baby to go, put down your deposit so that you are guaranteed a spot!! If anyone is unsure of what to ask or what to look for, please do not hesitate to pick my brain. This is what I do all day long and I am  happy to help with such an important decision.

    Good Luck!!
