Hi Everyone!
I have been lurking for a couple of weeks now, and I have to say that I have learned a lot from you all. It is horrible that so many of us have to go through IF, but it's comforting to know that we have a place to turn for support and to share information.
Here is a little back story on me and my DH:
We have been trying to get pregnant for a year. I made an appointment with my OB/GYN to have 'the talk'. DH had an appointment with his family doctor for something unrelated and mentioned our situation. His doctor went ahead and wrote him an order for a SA. His results came back pretty bad: 0.5 million total count, 5% rapid motility, and they didn't even do the morphology. Second SA was ordered to confirm the results and they were pretty much the same: 1.5 million total count, 0% rapid motility, 0% morphology.
He was referred to a Urologist and his appointment is June 1st. We went ahead and moved up my appointment to last Friday so we could get some info and to start my testing(bloodwork, HSG, etc). My OB/GYN confirmed my fears: if Urologist can't fix Dh's problem, our only option is IVF. However, she isn't going to to any testing on me right now. She saw my temp. charts and said that I ovulate. She wants to wait until DH sees the Urologist. She said that if his problem can't be fixed, my tubes, etc won't matter since we'll have to do IVF.
She gave us the name of a RE to use if we have to do IVF and I know he'll do testing, but I just figured my OB/GYN would do the preliminary testing. At least the bloodwork. What if the Urologist can fix the problem and we try for a few months and then find something wrong with me? I go back on June 12th for my annual exam and I'm thinking about asking for the bloodwork. What do you think? What should I ask her to test for. I know there is CD 3 bloodwork and 7DPO bloodwork, but if I say that that's what I want, will she know what hormone levels to check? I should have insisted then that I get the bloodwork, but I was so shocked that she wasn't going to do it, I just let it go.
Sorry this was so long. I appreciate any advice you can give.
Re: MFI and female testing ?(Long)
I agree, I would not even bother with seeing your OB/GYN about it, and head straight to an RE. They will be able to start testing. Remember that some of the F testing can only be done on certain days, so it's better to get in earlier than wait around.
I agree with everyone -- get yourself to an RE!
We're MFI, too, but through some of my testing found out that I also have a fibroid that needs to be removed. It would be great for you to do any of your testing and treatments (if applicable) simultaniously with your DH's stuff. It takes at least 3 months to know if any treatments the urologist would do have worked (one thing that sucks about MFI), so the more you can do at the same time the less waiting on the other end.
GL, and I'm sorry you have to be here! We have a MFI check in on Mondays that you're wlecome to join. ((hugs))
My blog: Making Me Mom
Hey there, I agree with the pp, but if also depends on your insurance... my insurance does not cover any infertility testing what so ever... knowing that in advance, I asked my OB to do a full work up and test my blood for everything. I had been reading several book already on IVF and knew what tests the RE would do... so I took that list to my OB, who I had also made aware of my husband's MFI and told her that she would be savings me tons of money if she would do all my labwork. She understood and agreed. I must have had 15 or more blood vials drawn. My insurance covered all of it because it was done at the same time as my annual exam and was ordered by my OB as regular pre-natal bloodwork. Had I have done them through my RE... I would have paid for every single one OOP. My RE accepted the results and did not require me to re-test as they had all been done just 3 weeks before I had my 1st IVF consult.
Good luck!
Thank you all so much for responding! The way I understand my insurance is that they will cover the testing and they will pay to have any problems fixed; unless it is in preparation for IUI or IVF. I have confirmed that I can see a RE and it will be covered. Pharmacuticals of any kind, however, are not covered. I would feel better if I had the testing done on me to rule out any problems with my body.
Thanks again for your advice. I think I will be calling the RE this week.
My story is a lot like yours. My husband had only .6ml and .7ml and his motility is VERY low like your DH. We just met with the RE last week and he did verify I'm ovulating, but ordered bloodwork and hsg just to make sure. He wants my DH to work with specialized urologist on some different meds to bring up his counts. We were told if it does not work, we'll be doing IVF as well. Just thought i'd share we have similar stories, and I'm so sorry your going through this!
