cloth diapers

I saw in a magazine at the doctor's office that they still make cloth diapers. Only they look a lot like disposable with velcro and elastic and everything.  Where do I buy these?

You'll have to forgive me. I'm in my first tri-mester. I'm 41, my first child, haven't babysat in yeeeearrrrrs and the last I checked cloth diapers went out in the early 80's.

I am SO excited about these cloth diapers. Anyone have any recommendations on which ones are best and where to find them?  Target?  Would they really have these?  Or are they a specialty I'm going to have to search for online?

TIA!

  • Target has some online (bum Genius), but I'd recommend checking out some CD specialty websites:

    www.moderndiapers.com
    www.abbyslane.com
    www.nickisdiapers.com
    www.jilliansdrawers.com
    www.diaperpin.com  are just a few.

There is a ton of information, and many different kinds of diapers from prefolds (what you probably are familiar with from the 80's), fitted diapers (which require a cover like pfs do, but generally snap or velcrow shut, unline pfs, which need to be folded and pinned or attached with a snappi), pocket diapers (you may have seen BumGenius 3.0's in that advertisement - I know I've seen them in a parenting magazine before - they're one sized, so will last quite awhile on your baby, although they generally don't fit until baby is at least 10 lbs) and AIO (all in ones) which are the closest to modern disposable diapers.

There are pro's and cons to each type, and everyone has their favorites.  You may want to check out some of the websites, get a feel for what's out there, check out some old posts here and ask questions as the arise.

    Good luck!  :)

  • I use bumGenius diapers.  I LOVE them :)

    Cottonbabies.com is one site :)

  • There's so much info out there. You probably saw the Bum Genius. Everyone I've shown them too thinks they are amazing (and they are). There's alot of different brands out there. diaperpin.com has alot of product reviews and tells you where you can get them.

    They are just adorable.

  • Ditto on the Bum Genius

    I buy from https://www.nellsnaturalbaby.com/

Sorry, none of those little buttons are working for me (for some reason...?) so I can't make it a clicky.

Try this link for a primer as well
  • First you should decide what kind of CD you want to try: fitted with cover, all in one (AIO), pocket, etc. Most moms end up using a mix.

Then once you feel comfortable with, say, pocket diapers - you can start researching and trying different brands within them. Like BumGenius 3.0 pocket.

Some diapers are one size - meaning they snap in various formations to fit a baby from about 12-35 lbs.

It is overwhelming at first. Cloth diaper trial packages give you a few to try. Or you can purchase a few different kinds piecemeal until you determine you like them.

I would avoid buying a full stash of diapers because every baby and mama are different in terms of what works best for them. However, you can also purchase and sell gently used diapers on diaperswappers.com and get good prices.

  • Thank you! You are all a wealth of information. I'm determined to go cloth.

Now I've got some homework to do....
