3rd Trimester

Would you take a newborn to Philly?

Unless I wait to deliver at 39 wks, we won't be able to take a full week vacation this year because I'll be past my 12 wks I'm taking off. If we do make it to this point, we're going to Outer Banks.

However, I'm thinking if we can only get away for 3-4 nights, we'll go to Philadelphia in late July, so baby will be around 2 months old. The main thing we'll go to see is Sesame Place, but since I'd be there, I'd want to stay in downtown Philly and try to discover some of that. Are we nuts though? I'd never think of taking a newborn and toddler to Chicago, yet some how I'm thinking this wouldn't be as bad. But then again, people live there with newborns, and they obviously do fine getting around! (Yes, I'm showing my ridiculous suburbanite-ness I guess). Would you do this though or look for something a little more laid back....like maybe Seasme Place one day but maybe go onto the Poconos or something the rest of the time.

  • Sesame place is not in Phily...it's outside of it in PA. Plus, it's a theme park. I wouldn't call a theme park a "quiet day."

Also, the Poconos are about another hour from Philly. That's a lot of traveling.

You could do it, but I would research more of more low key things to do in Philly.

  • I am a Philly girl and I can tell you that I would wait a little. The city, especially downtown, is very congested. I didn't take my daughter out in public areas or visitor spots until she was older. Too much smog and too many people. Poconos should be okay.

I agree, theme parks are full of germs, her immune system may not be strong enough by then.

  • I don't know how much you and the baby would be up for Sesame Place, in the hot sun...all day, or walking around Philly.  It could be really hot at that time.  The Pocono's might be an option however... It really is up to you, and how you feel.  I remember going to Williamsburg, VA on a weekend trip after my mom had my little sister (she was three months) and it was really quiet, and my mom was exhausted.  It really is about you and how you feel you might do, people travel all of the time with their infants :)

  • I live in a suburb of Philly and I honestly don't know if I would take a newborn in...haha. It's nothing against Philly. It's just that I can think of other places I'd rather go. I vaguely remember you asking about Jersey shore (was that on D&R?). I'd much rather go to Ocean City, NJ.  It is an awesome, relaxing place that your whole family will love, You can lounge on the beach during the day and walk the boards at night.  It's only about an hour or so from Philly.  I guess when I think of going to Philly, I picture a lot of walking. I'd also save Sesame Place for when your baby is a little older, so that everyone could enjoy it. Oh, and like pp said, it would be odd to go to Sesame Place and stay in Philly. They really aren't that close. You may find it to be more of a headache.

getting around philly is easy. so long as you don't mind dealing with the baby during everyday task, you'll be fine.

but sesame place is a 40-minute drive north of the city. fyi.

Ditto Ocean City or Wildwood. Your family would have a blast there.

I would take a newborn to Philly but it's kind of unavoidable for me because I'm in and out of the city a few times a week. It is a nice city and there are tons of stuff for kids to do there (the Zoo, Aquarium, Please Touch Museum, the Franklin, Museum of Natural History, etc.) but I'd wait until your newborn is a couple years old and then go. You'll all love it then.

    I live outside of Philly.

The main thing I would say is that traveling and staying in a hotel with a newborn/infant will not be fun wherever you go.  The baby is still so young-  could be colicy, not on a feeding or sleeping routine yet.  I just do not think it would be fun for you.  At 4-6 months, you will have figured things out a bit more.

The baby is still very young and the first 3 months are very hard.  People say that it is easiest to travel when your little one is an infant, but that just means that they sleep a lot and won't scream in the car or on a plane to get out and walk around.

Sesame place is not really laid back.  It is a kid park with kid things to do.  (about 30 minutes outside of Philly, not an hour). The poconos are a hike.  However, Philly is a great place to visit with things nearby to do.  New Hope and Lambertville would be a more laid back day trip.  the constitution center is very nice and Manyunk is an artsy area.  But again- with a two month old?   I wouldn't.

I just saw that it looks like you have an almost 2 year old?  Are you plannign the trip for a relaxing weekend ofr you and DH?, or a trip for your almost 2 year old?   Well, closer to center city, Philly is the new Please Touch Museum, the Zoo and the Acquarium. He is at the age where he would love Sesame.  I would just be leary about the newborn in the sun since a baby cannot wear sunscreen.  But if you carry the baby in a front carrier like a Bijorn, after put long sleeves and a hat then you should be fine.

The Constitution center is a lot of fun as well.

A friend of ours has a 5 month old, and she has flown 3 times already and taken an 18 hour car ride.  The first time they flew with her she was 3 weeks old.  They had a work convention they needed to go to so she went too.
