How did you decide?

How did you decide which one would carry/give birth?  I haven't asked my sister and her partner on their choice.  I am just curious because I have heard of couples that both have done it and others that only one has.  Tell me how you decided and why.

Re: How did you decide?

  • I've always wanted to be pregnant, my wife, not so much.  Our RE did say we had the option of having my DW carry but use my eggs.  However, my wife still takes baby aspirin for pain, we knew there was no way she'd ever make it through the meds of IVF.  We thought for awhile about using her eggs and have me carry, but she's older and our odds of having a healthy full term baby were less than 5%.

So that's how I ended up with the job. :-p

  • Both my wife and I wanted to experience being pregnant.  I went first since I am older (2 years)  I will be 36 when I give birth.  My wife will carry our second child in a few years when we decide to have another.

  • I've already had one child and have wanted to have another, giving birth is such an amazing experience.  DW has never wanted to be pregnant and she has hormone problems, her testosterone is really high for a woman.

We are the typical butch/femme couple so there wasn't really a discussion, we just knew I would carry our children.  We've talked about doing IVF in the future so that she can have a biological child too.

  • We each wanted to try, always have.

Our original plan was for me to go first. I had prepared for it with prenatals, charting etc for so long it just made sense for me to start. However, since I have PCOS and a clotting factor we switched to her trying first to allow me to get those issues under control. I regret that choice but know we will each have our turn eventually.

  • We always knew I would carry, as my wife had a hysterectomy and has no uterus. We did very briefly consider using her eggs (she still has her ovaries), but she's in her mid-40s so we decided against it for the health of the child.

  • we both plan to carry, but she's a few years older than me so she's going first. someone asked me on my blog not too terribly long ago so i wrote a bit more in-depth about it there. here's the link if you want to read it.
  • I have no interest in ever being pregnant, whereas my wife has envisioned it her entire life - easy choice!
  • I've always wanted the experience of being pregnant and giving birth. My wife has zero desire, but is super excited about watching my belly grow! Easy decision Smile

  • I've *always* wanted to be pregnant, K- no. Although she did say that she would carry if I can't get preg (but just as a favor to me- and I'm not sure it would really be a favor...I'm sure I would be consumed with jealousy).
