Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would you bring LO to the pedi?

Ok, I feel like a broken record on here, but I'm just unsure what to do.  DD has had a cold (I guess it's a cold) since starting daycare.  The saline drops have helped clear up her nose, but now she sounds like she's getting a pretty raspy sounding chest cough - I used the humidifier one night and it made everything worse.  It was pretty bad this morning.  I've already called the pedi at the onset of her cold, but they told me that these things work themselves out usually.  I don't know, though.  I've had chest colds that have turned into bronchitis.  I just don't want to sit around thinking it's going to go away on its own and then it turn into something like pneumonia.

I know it's stupid to ask, but I know many of you have been through this with your LO, and I'm curious to see what decision you made.

  • Is she running a fever at all?  That may sway me to take her.  DD has been at the pedi 3 times for sick baby visits since starting daycare and they always tell me she is fine...but I always feel better that I took her in....gives me the piece of mind too.

Does the cough sound wheezy at all?  I took DS when he had a pretty bad chest cough that sounded wheezy.  They put him on nebulizer treatments.  It's so hard w/ colds.  I know they take a long time in babies, but it's really hard to watch your child be uncomfortable.  I would call them back, tell them about the cough, that it seems to be getting worse and you are concerned.  Hopefully they can see you, just to ease your mind. If the cough sounds wheezy, or crackily, I think they get more concerned.  GL! I hope she feels better soon!

  • Knowing myself, I'd take her in knowing what they'd say and it would be a waste of a copay. Unless the symtpoms worsed or she develops a fever they won't do anything. I'd just continue with humidifier, nasal spray/aspirator, maybe infant Vicks vaporub (our pedi said this was ok), maybe get the bathroom steamy and sit in there with her to help clear confestion, elevate her head when she is sleeping if you can. I think all you can do is those things and wait it out :( I know it is rough.

  • Take her...  I was told to take him in if his cold didn't get better within 72 hours, or if a bad cough started. So i would take her in imo.

  • Nope, she never has a fever, so that's why I'm so hesitant.  Ugh.  It's so hard being a mom sometimes.  I just don't want to be all like, "Oh, she's fine" and then find out she has pneumonia.
  • I could have written this post.  DS has had a cough that comes and goes, but has gotten increasingly nasty sounding this past week...but never had any fever!  I put in a call to the pedi, just in case.

  • I called - they told me to take her in.
