How do you handle sick days?

DD is home sick for her first time. I am home too - trying to work during naps. Do you just take vacation time? Obviously, I need to try to set up some backup care, but I'm wondering what the rest of you do?

Re: How do you handle sick days?

  • If DS is sick, DH or I take a sick day.

  • So far, we've had three days, and DH and I split the day.  At my job, no one really counts our sick or vacation days, as long as you are getting your work done.  But it's hard to miss the whole day.

I take a sick day.  The worst is when daycare calls at 11am saying DS has a fever and someone needs to be there in an hour.
  • Depending on the day of the week, DH or I take sick days.

  • I'm pretty lucky- if DS is sick, I can bring him to work with me (depending on the illness-- he has just had a couple of colds, and I also bring him after his vaccines).  DH could work from home if really needed.

  • So, far, we've both taken a day.  We also had my mom (retired) come stay with her 2 days - one when she had a cold and just needed to sleep and another time when she threw up for no reason and couldn't go back to DC for 24 hours.

  • A couple of times I stayed home, and once when she had to leave midday, I brought her to work with me.

  • I usually stay home with DS, work when I can, and either take PTO for part of the day or make up the hours once DH gets home.
  • I would take a vacation day or most of the time DD and I would both get sick and then DH would stay home too.

I try and work as much as possible and take PTO hours for the time that I am with her.  I try and have my sister or ILS help out part of the day so I can work and also work over naps but it all depends on what is going on, how sick the girls are and stuff like that.  My sister works 2 days a week so can typically help out and my ILS both work but are typically willing and able to take a half day if needed.  My DH and I also try and split the day or take turns.   My boss is very understanding and I work from home 2 days a week anyway so I almost always have my PC with me and do what I can do.  I sometimes make up the time at night or another day if its only an hour or two that I'm not working.

  • i use vaca or sick time.
  • sick day...in our hand book the sick days are for you or immediate family member.
  • It depends on what is going on at work.  If I need to be in the office, DH and I will split the day if we can.  I've called in for meetings before when I really couldn't make it into the office.  And, they've been really great about me WAH with a sick child w/o taking vacation.  I can still get a lot done and I'm pretty responsive, so that makes them happy.  I think they'd rather do that than have me take a vacation day and not work at all.  With my last job, it was a little dicey.  My former boss was not as cool with that, so I usually ended up taking a vacation day and working.  =(

Ditto.  But recently it's always been me taking the day off.

  • I'm lucky that my mom watches DS but when he is too ill for her to watch him I take a sick day or vacation day.
