1st Trimester

You should not be allowed to be a mom ....

If you don't even know how to spell maternity.

An old friend of mine posted photos on FB, with the title "maturinty photos". It wasn't a mistake, either as she used this same spelling somewhere else.

  • This isn't a pregnancy-related spelling pet peeve, but I can stand it when people spell or pronounce supposedly as "supposebly." ?Have you ever seen it written? ?Oh, and don't even get me started on their/they're/there!!

You know, after the special needs post yesterday, you'd think we could be a little more forgiving of the fact that some people never have been, and never will be good spellers. I have plenty of students who couldn't spell maternity to save their lives, but they are wonderful with little children and will make great parents one day. Yes, educated people "should" be able to spell- but in this age of spell check, most people, if they have difficulty in that area, can hide it pretty well and overcome it. And if someone isn't considered "educated", why fault them for that, really? I'm sure they have plenty of other talents. Last time I checked, correct spelling did not = good parenting skills. My own mother can't spell for jack, but she was a fantastic parent who raised four very successful children.
  • My MIL pronounces similar sim-YOU-lar and it makes me want to throat punch her every time.
  • One of my pregnant friends posted pictures of her "Bobymoon" on Facebook. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be Babymoon or "Bobbymoon," since her husband's name is Bobby. I'm assuming it was supposed to be Babymoon. It was just an innocent typo, I know, but she never did correct it. I mean, you can go back in and edit that sort of thing, y'know?
  • There are much worse transgressions than poor spelling.

    Intolerance of differences, for one.

  • What gives people the right to put others down simply because they may be a bad speller?  I'm sorry but that's just not right, nor does it mean they shouldn't be allowed to have a child because they may spell a couple of words wrong.  Don't we have anything better to be talking about?

  • My best friend is a HORRIBLE speller, but a fantastic mom.  I don't think spelling has much of an impact on your parenting abilities.  I think it's pretty mean to even say such a thing.

Joking would have been just making fun of how she spelled it- tying it to her parental abilities is where it stopped being funny.

HUGE pet peeve for me! Everyone I know says it that way!

Ha ha I know! I really don't think that spelling words incorrectly and having poor judgment on how to pronounce words would make you a bad parent, but some people should pick up a dictionary!
