Sarah is still very, very popular. I work with young children and see it all the time -- with various spellings apart from Sarah/Sara (unfortunately!). Melissa and Jennifer are still fairly popular also.
I agree that Sarah is pretty "in" now. Melissa and Jennifer. Fine names but I can't see them being popular again. But there's no way to ever know! There are names that I've learned are popular from this board that i never would have predicted.
I do think that if people honored women more and passed down female family names, Melissa and Jennifer would still be used a lot. Take DS's name, William- there are now and have always been a million Williams! But we used it because it's a family name. It's here to stay. Many more parents will name their boys William (or James or Michael) because of a family member or the dad.
Many of the names that are popular now are from our grandparents' or great-grandparents' era. Give it a couple generations and they'll be back when our kids' kids are naming babies after "Grandma Jenny"
I'm a Sarah and I've never thought of my name as "popular", per se, but I feel that it's a pretty consistent "safe" name. Not super popular, but never unpopular either.

i think sarah is a classic name. b/c it's a biblical name it will always have more longeivity. melissa & jennifer are totally 80s. no clue when those names will make a return. i expect we'll see jessica with those names!

Ditto. Sarah can't be lumped with those other two 70s and 80s names.?
I think the popularity of names generally go in cycles so I'm sure Jennifer and Melissa and Jessica and such will be popular again. Probably for our grandchildren or so
I love Sarah, but Jennifer and Melissa have a long way to go, IMO. I am a Jennifer and hate the name. It is so token 80s name and I can't see it losing that title for a long time. Maybe our kids will go back to those names. I do, however, love other less popular 80s names. Just the major/most popular bug me.

I think Sarah will always be popular.
Melissa is still pretty common where I am.
I would have thought Jennifer would have been more popular than it has been. I don't know why.?
