2nd Trimester

Choroid plexus cyst? please help

Well today was the big u/s and we found out we're having a boy! DH was super excited...but right after the good news the Dr. paused and said he saw a choroid plexus cyst and that I would need to have some tests done.  We are really freaking out....he said not to worry and that most of them  "go away" by 28 weeks but it could be a sign of Downs.  One of our best friend's little brother has Downs and we love him, so it's not like we would love our baby any less! We are just concerned and wanted to know if any of you have had experience with this, thank-you.

Re: Choroid plexus cyst? please help

  • We had the same thing happen to us at our 20 week u/s. In fact, my baby had two so we were told we would have to go back in for follow up u/s to make sure they did go away. I went in just a couple of weeks ago at 24 weeks and 1 cyst completely disappeared and the other one shrunk considerably! We were happy with the results and have to go back in at 30 weeks to ensure the one remaining has disappeared. We were really freaked out too when we received the news. After doing some research we felt better knowing these cysts are just "markers" and did not mean our LO had Down's. They could be just part of normal development from what the genetic counselor told us. Best of luck to you and your little boy!

  • We're going through the same situation, however I have found from all of my research that if there wasn't any other indicators of genetic disorders, it will probably go away.

Scary I know, but really, the odds are in our favor. Good luck and try not to worry too much. I am so glad to know a couple of other people are going through this on this board. ( kinda glad, wish none of us had to go through it ;)

My u/s is in July...best of luck and let's keep each other updated :).

  • Take a huge deep breath and relax. Seriously. We had the SAME thing happen to us. And although I had never heard of it before, my Doc said it was very common. On Friday we had our follow up U/S and the cyst was gone. All is healthy. So hang in there, say some prayers, and have faith that these people are most likely right.

& BTW-love the wedding dress! I had the same one!!!

  • Yep! I agree with the other girls, it is typically not a big deal. Our doctor said we had a .001% of a chance of it being "something". Not even enough for him to do further testing since it was the only soft marker we had. I feel pretty confident in those odds!
  • Same situation.  20 weeks.  Bilateral cysts.  Went in less than 2 weeks later they were both gone.  My doctor actually said they are a bit of a nuisance and wish they didn't even tell their patients because they cause unnecessary worry.  She said in all her years she has never seen them NOT go away.  Unless you had obvious other markers, there is really no need to worry about genetic disorders!  GL!
  • We had the same experience at 18 weeks. A CPC is actually an idicator for Trisomy 18, not Downs. The good news is, it is very unlikely that your child has Trisomy 18 if the CPC is the only soft marker and the cycts do not effect the development of your child in anyway, regardless of whether they go away or not. Even if they do go away though, the marker was still there, so it is still a "risk factor." Our other tests all showed that we were very low risk, but we were so stressed with worry, we decided to have an amnio done. The amnio went great and all is well with our little girl....46 perfect chromosomes!!
  • Thank-you everyone so much! I really appreciate it! I went today to get my blood drawn for the quad marker screening and next weds. I go to see a specialist for another sono. I'm pretty sure everything will be ok since there are no other markers that we know of and DH and I are 22 and 23, so i think our risk factors are pretty low.  But you all know how it feels when you first hear the news..... Thanks again for all your replies my mind is slowly starting to rest!
  • not sure if any of you are following this still but i had my apt. today w/ the specialist.....There are now 2 cysts...or maybe my regular Dr. just missed one...but he said my chances are very very low of having anything abnormal due to the cysts.  Now what we have to worry about is the kidneys.  If it's not one thing it's another! He said they look a little large, but not to worry and to come back in 8 weeks to check on them.  He said if it was a big deal he would want me to do an amniocentesis and he doesn't, yet anyways.  Hope you guys are having better luck!
