Parenting after a Loss

Avent vs. Born Free Bottles?

Hi mommies!  I plan on bf until I head to work -- but want to start lo on the bottle early so that DH can share in the bonding fun.  I like the feel of Avent, DH's like the feel of Born Free.  Other then that I have nothing to go off of.  Thoughts on which are better and why?  I have heard to not get too many incase lo does not like them....so that is another question, what is considered enough? thanks!

Re: Avent vs. Born Free Bottles?

  • We have both, I prefer the Avent when I'm in a rush b/c it doesn't have all the parts (valves, etc.) that the Born Free ones do.  We have 2 Avent and 6 Born Free.  I sometimes think it's not enough, but I'm BF and formula feeding so I tend to need more than someone who was just looking to give an occasional bottle here and there.

  • we have the avent and like them a lot, we bought them from the get go and she liked them. I pumped and we gave her the 1st bottle around 1 1/2 weeks old and she took it just fine

she goes to daycare now so we have 15 or so 4oz ones and I haven't needed the bigger ones so I am not sure how many we have. One nice thing is that we have way more rings than nipples and sealing discs so we just keep the nipples and sealing disks matched up to rings and don't have to swap them out when we make the bottles. if that makes sense

  • We have 3 Born Free, 1 Green to Grow, 4 or 5 Medela bottles.  I like all of them equally and DD doesn't care what she drinks out of.

  • We use the Born Free, I really like them and Jax has never had any issues with them. We have 8 small bottles and 2 big ones which is enough for us, we bottle feed only.

I would say go with the ones that YOU like though. You will probably be doing most of the feedings since you will be with your baby the most....so get the ones that you like. :)

  • Honestly, I think that your lo will tell you which one.  We have Avent and Born Free, and K ended up loving Dr., Brown's glass.  We don't use any other kind.
  • We use Born Free and dd loves them and we have never had a problem.

  • i BF and have tried EVERY bottle out there for giving her pumped milk once in a while.  we had some success with the avent ones for a while, then the nuk ones, and now she'll take it most easily from the dr. browns ones.  i have a couple of born free ones too and she does okay with them, but primarly seems to be cooperative with the dr. browns.  for now anyway.

seriously, my kitchen looks like the BRU bottle aisle.  you name the brand, we've got it.  she HATED the nuby one and the adiri (of course, the 2 most like the breast and most expensive).  grrr.

  • It's true - your LO will tell you which ones he/she prefers.  We have Born Free, Dr. Brown, and Medela.  Jacob only likes the Born Free nipples.  Plus we preferred the Born Free bottles because he didn't get as much gas when he drank from them.  We never tried the Avent because my BFF used them and I just remember them leaking if you didn't put the nipples and rings together properly.  Personally, I wanted bottles that were BPA free, and at the time Avent hadn't come out with theirs yet.  We just registered for one set of the BF and Dr B.  We already had the Medelas.  Now, we have 7 5 oz and 1 - 9 oz.  Jacob is mostly breast milk - bottle fed.
  • We love the First Years Breastflow bottles. They are kind of hard to find.. but you can buy them on amazon or bru online. DD does great with them.. We havent' needed to try many other kinds. I have tried the playtex drop ins too. They are not bad either.. I DO NOT like the medela bottles.. Even the slow flow nipples are way too fast, and they are too narrow.. None of the milk ends up in my DD's mouth, she drools it everywhere instead.

For your DH to just give a bottle once in awhile or for going out, I'd say get 3 bottles.. That is all we had til I went back to work.. Now that I am back to work we have 5.. I could probably use more, but they take up so much space.. I only work part time..
