Anyone experiance an older infant w/ weight loss?

D has lost 4 ounces (meaning gained NO weight) since his 6 month appt. He will be 11 months on the 3rd.

Last week he had a follow up and had lost 2 oz since his 9 mo. and they cathed him and sent me to the hospital for bloodwork.

Test came back cleaned but they want to see him again next week to check his weight. We will be off to a pediatric endocronologist after that.

Any experiance? Thoughts?

  • No experience, just wanted to say good luck and I hope he is just fine!  Please keep me updated!

  • Also, I'm supposed to be trying to fatten him up. Help me w/ ideas for foods. He has not had dairy but we are going to start yogurt today.

  • I don't, but I saw where he has started taking steps...  Could it be that he is becoming more active and therefor burning more calories?
  • Hey!!

I hope it is nothing- I am sending good thoughts. I would be worried, too- Juniper is not gaining much right now, but she's 2, and the pedi thinks its ok...

and also: WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?

I hope ( other than this, which I hope it nothing big) That all is well with you guys.

  • has he been sick lately?

  •  Nope, has not been sick. 1 ear infection in his whole life. I thought initially it was him being active as well but the pedi doesn't think he would lose weight over several months JUST from that but thinks it may be contributing.

    Just a waiting game...ugh!

    Thanks for the thoughts!

  • Wasn't he a very big baby? It seems normal that he'd thin out as he gets mobile and not need to gain weight. Unless he's way under the charts weight-wise, I don't understand the concern or the need to take him to an endocrinologist. Seems rather alarmist to me.
  • R went from 6mo to 12 mo only gaining 2 pounds (and that was sometime between 9 and 12 b/c at her 9 mo appt. she weighed the same as at 6mo).

R was crawling just shy of 6 months and walking at 11months.  The pedi said they usually see the dip a little later, but by 15 months, she had started gaining again, so she thought it was OK.

Maybe he's just having his dip a little early, too.  I hope everything is OK and he starts gaining soon!  If he's doing OK otherwise, I would try not to worry too much!

I agree.  Is he growing in length?  meeting milestones?

what's his intake like?  if you're nursing.. how many times a day?  If FF, how many ounces?

  • I don't have any experience w/ this exactly, but at 4 months DD was 16 lbs. ?and now, at 9 months, she's at 16 lbs. 10 oz. (We just had her 9 mo check up today). ?The pedi didn't seem at all concerned with this...but I don't think its quite right. ?I understand they get more mobile, etc, but still...she went from the 81%tile to 14%tile for her weight. ?I'm kinda wondering if I should ask a few more questions... ?
  • Are you BFing?  DD's weight slowed tremendously between 6 and 12 mos.  I'm not sure if she gained much, if anything.  Once she started eating more table food, she started gaining again.  She's still pretty petite, but she eats well and has gained steadily since 1 y/o.  I think she's gained about 5 lbs. since her 1st bday, so she made up for not gaining earlier.
  • If he is eating solids I would try avacados, full-fat yogurt (YoBaby) and things like sweet potatoes and squash with regular butter.  Also, if you fry anything for him (scrambled eggs) use either regular butter or extra virgin olive oil.  Oatmeal with pancake syrup for flavor.  My guy was a light weight and those are the things I did.  He ate a whole avacado every day (and loves them still).  He started gaining in less than a month.
