Birth control decision - IUD?

Hi ladies!

I'm jumping over from 3rd trimester with a question about the form of birth control you chose after delivering. I'm specifically interested in the IUD and would love to know about your experience with it. For example, when was it inserted? Was there discomfort? What are your periods like now? Are you nursing?

I guess a little background would be good: I have a 3 year old, a 1.5 year old and am expecting #3 in 5 weeks. We would very much like to be done (I'm 36 and 3 is what we always wanted) and my husband is underwhelmed by the prospect of a vasectomy.

Thanks for any insight!

Re: Birth control decision - IUD?

  • I just got my Mirena IUD, but I figured I could at least tell you about the procedure. It was easy. I was on the table maybe 10 minutes. I had some mild cramping that day, but I took 2 Advil and was fine! The next 2 days I had some light spotting. My OB warned me that I could spot for up to 6 months though.

I got mine a few weeks ago same story. And I have been spotting a bit since then. I am hoping it is going away now...

  • I got the Paragaurd - I didn't want any more hormones in my body.  It's good for 10 years.

Insertion was easy - I felt a pinch but it wasn't bad.  This was at my 6 week PP checkup - I called ahead to make sure I could get it that day.

My periods last about a week with really light days and then one super heavy day.  But I was on the pill for 15 years before I got PG so who knows how they will settle down.

    I'm not nursing.

    LOVE it.

  • I got Paragard, which is the nonhormonal one.  They wouldn't insert it for me until 12 weeks postpartum.  It was not bad at all, I think I was there for 10 minutes, and there was only some mild cramping.  I didn't even have to take any pain relievers.  My periods have been on the heavy side, but not too bad.  I'm very happy with my choice.

    ETA: I am nursing.

  • Thanks for your answers so far, everyone!

  • The norm seems to be a pretty simple process.

Mine was not though. It was honestly a horrible experience getting mine inserted. I was in SO much pain. Even my Dr. said that she was surprised it was that painful for me. I also bled ALOT when she inserted it. Shortly after getting dressed I passed out.

I wouldn't do it again thats for sure and I am dreading getting it removed in a few years.

  • I am looking at getting the Paraguard, as I wanted to go hormone free.  I was told I can not get it inserted until 12 weeks PP, as I had a C-section, so I am scheduled for mid-June. Did anyone have spotting with the Paraguard or is it just the Mirena (progesterone) that causes spotting?
