Can a car seat (in a travel bag) be gate checked?

I would like to be able to gate check our umbrella stroller and our car seat (we have a travel bag for it). Is this possible, or would they consider the car seat a checked bag?

I guess I will probably just have to call the airlines, but I thought someone here would know first hand.

    Yes you can gate check it with no charge. ?I have researched this for our upcoming trip.

    You can gate check it.  Untited also allows you to check it at the ticket counter at no additional cost.  We checked one suitcase and the car seat and only paid $15.
